  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

So here is your chance to make a confession ladies and gents :p

My confession is...wait for it...please, I beg you, don't tell my mother...I hate gardening!
Whew. There. I said it. (Looks around carefully and hopes her mother cannot see this post.)
Ok. I feel better.

I grew up on a farm. We have had HUGE GYNORMOUS gardens my whole life. I can plant a vegetable garden that would knock your socks off. I can plant flower beds that look gorgeous. I have all the knowledge. I know how to do it so well. BUT I HATE IT!

Is it horrible if I never garden again?

I planted a wonderous garden this year. My momma will be so proud of me when she visits. The front of my house looks gorgeous. I just added some new hostas and some decorations. It looks so pretty. But the whole time I was grumbling in my spirit. I didn't want to do it. I just did it because I thought I should do it. We have lots of yard and a fresh veggie garden is worth the time and effort, right?

Sigh.

I need an attitude adjustment. LOL

Is it ever alright to not do what you expect of yourself?

Whew...got that off my chest.

Ok, who else had a confession. Don't leave me out in the cold here.

My wife does not do a lot of veggie gardening because she says it is to easy to buy food at the store. I would not stop if I were you but you could cut way back if you want. Or maybe you need to go in a new direction. You need to pray and allow the Holy Spirit to Guide you and show you the way to go. Could be God has something better He wants you to do.

A veggie garden's only worth the time and effort, if that's what you value more than whatever else you'd do with that time and effort.

I like to garden but the truth is I don't have a lot of time to put into it (because I prioritise other things), so I make low-maintenance gardening choices. Then every so often I find half a day to put into keeping it from turning to jungle.

But the question is, why do you expect it of yourself? Have you absorbed the idea that a good wife keeps a fabulous garden? Is that from God, or a cultural expectation? And so on. Personally I think if you want a garden, great; and if you don't, that's fine too. Whether you garden or don't garden, do whatever you do in honour of the Lord.

My confession is probably ironing. I avoid it at all cost. My mother would be horrified if she realised I couldn't tell you the last time I actually used an iron!

This is true. My trouble is I have to be very careful about what I eat. I have some health issues related to my stomach, among other things. I'm used to eating all organic, all grass fed beef, free range chicken etc. I bake all my own bread etc. It's annoying.

Guilty. I think my mom had ingrained that in me. Never to have idle hands. It's like this internal battle. I can't give myself permission to not do it. It will save us money etc.

haha This is why I love my dryer. My mom would be horrified to know I put clothes in the dryer on a sunny day. :D

My mother, on endless repeat through my childhood: "Idle hands are the workshop of the devil!"

I have to give her fair credit, she lived the way she preached, but... I am not my mother!

Yes I have to do all of that. My stomach is sensitive. The most difficult is I have to avoid salt. That requires me to cook most everything from scratch.

Sadly, I am not my mother either. I wish I was half the person she is. I want to be like her but I don't have the patience or the humility. She has taught me so much of what a Godly woman should be. I guess I'm trying hard to be like her.

Each of us has to grow into being our own person. I can look at my mum, her selflessness, her reflexive attitude of service, and so on, and see where that's shaped who I am, too. But it shows up in different ways in my life, because my life is very different.

I think part of becoming mature adults is recognising how we integrate what we've learned from our parents into living our own lives. You might be a fabulous and godly woman, who lives a totally different lifestyle from your mum... and that's okay. Because God created you to be you, and not your mum!

In some ways it probably helped me that my parents moved country when I was very little. So not only was there not the expectation, but it would have been culturally impossible, for me to kind of live my mother's life on repeat. But even then my parents have sometimes struggled with my choices; and that's okay too!

Your post made me laugh!

I used to do a veggie garden and flower beds, too, and it can become a lot of work! I gave up on them, myself.
Maybe next year you can get rid of the gardens and tell your Mom that you're going for a minimalist look? :D
And buy your veggies from farmers markets and fruit stands and just say you are supporting small businesses. (That's my excuse!)

My confession is I am really tired of cooking and dishing out food. I've been cooking for my husband for 25 years and I am just tired of cooking! lol! And then, I adopted a stray cat last year, and then two more showed up and hubby decided to adopt them, too, so now I get my hubby and three cats all looking at me with that "what time is dinner?" look in their eyes! Sometimes I just want to run off and let them fend for themselves, but I reckon (and maybe they reckon too?) that they would all just starve to death if I wasn't there to cook and dish up the dinner.

Whew! I feel better now! :D

chunkofcoal, I think it's time for your hubby to learn? 25 years and he doesn't take a turn cooking? No way!
Well, he made me a birthday dinner a couple times about 20 some years ago so I know he is capable of cooking -he just doesn't want to. One year for Christmas he wanted a big book on grilling, so I had high hopes about that - but nope -book is gathering dust on the bookshelf!:D

My confession along those lines is I can cook and bake, but do not like to, probably due to laziness. I do bake a great sourdough bread, and fry some awesome sourdough Yukon style flapjacks.

Last Purim I made sourdough latkes, a Jewish potato pancake, enough for our small congregation. I almost didn't get any myself.

I just don't do it very often. :(

I can quite enjoy cooking, but I dislike the grind of having to put a meal on the table every night, with all the work that goes with that; planning, shopping, managing the household routine, etc. I'm really grateful that my husband came into the marriage already able to cook (although a little under-resourced in knowing what to do with vegetables, admittedly... I had to teach him about healthy cooking!), and has been willing to share that chore.

I used to grumble in my spirit about being forced to do this as a teenager. My mother would make me plan, shop and prepare entire meals for our family...no easy task since when everyone was home, we were 11 in all. It got a little easier after my brother moved out and married. But even more complicated when he came home with his family. My mom insisted that each of us girls know how to plan and shop for meals for a family. I hated it. She would reprimand me for my sour attitude all the time.
Now, I am actually thankful. Shopping for two people and a betta fish is a piece of cake! My mom taught me to plan out a month's worth of meals. She taught me how to shop and budget and price compare and coupon...I've learned that Walmart has a price match guarantee so I can get much of my food at the same price if I bring in my flyers. I know most people know this but as a newbie wife, this is a big deal to me LOL I have to eat a special diet and we eat organic so it gets costly.
Right now, I've been enjoying the meal planned and preparation...perhaps, I need to come back in five years and read this and see if I still feel the same way. LOL

I need to excersice. I know I do. I just don't.

I think we all feel this way sometimes LOL I love to run but it's been so hot that I haven't been doing it. My doctor told me that it doesn't take look long to get out of shape which is so discouraging. It takes so long to get in shape...seems only fair it should take just as long to get out of it :D

When we were first married, I worked a fairly relaxed job that meant I was usually home by about 5pm; my husband wouldn't be home yet, but I'd put on some music, potter in the kitchen and dinner would be ready by the time he got home. We had similar taste in food, and it was relatively easy and stress free.

But life didn't stay like that. Having a child made a big difference (gone was the easy pottering in the kitchen!), and we've both shifted jobs. Then it turned out our daughter has autism and will eat very little of what we like. So it all got a lot more complicated.

These days, he cooks more than I do, but that's because I work more than he does. It seems to sort of balance itself out.

As for exercise... I'm in denial!
