  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The correct answer was, "Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!"

I sentence you to 4 hours in the comfy chair.

Does anyone have the slightest clue why Creationists insist on referring to the Theory of Evolution as "Darwinism" as if today's Evolutionary theory is exactly the same as it was back in Darwin's time?

Hi laconicstudent

Labelling evolution as "Darwinism" implies that the theory is an argument from authority, rather than based on evidence. This makes it much easier to attack. Discredit the authority, a single person - Darwin - and you undermine the whole theory. This is easier than discrediting the mountain of direct, observable evidence that supports the theory.

In any case, in my view Darwin pretty much got the theory totally correct. He just didn't have all the details we have today.

I must admit, it slightly upsets me that so many Christians (or so it seems) are turning to creationism now. It really has only been in the last 100, maybe 150 years that there has been such an addiction to interpret the Bible super literally. Christians throughout the ages - even without the benefit of science! - have suspected that Genesis may be a metaphorical account. St Augustus hypothesised that the world may have been created in an instant (rather than in 6 days).

Why we must turn away from our historical roots into blind fundamentalism is beyond me. The fact is, science knows evolution to be true. Newsweek did a survey of 480,000 scientists ('scientist' being defined as someone with a relevant degree (a Physics degree therefore would not count since it's not relevant)), and only 700 of them gave credence to creation science. It *is* an accepted fact in scientific circles.

If you can't make that fit with your theology, then that's a problem with your theology. It's not a problem with science.

arationalchristian, I have a question. Is your name arational, as in not rational? Or a rational, as in you are one rational Christian? I'm guessing the latter, but you never know.

Haha, that's pretty funny. I knew I should've capitalised the A and R!
The reason I called myself that is because on another Christian Forum I frequent there's a member called 'afriendlyathiest'

I shall have to ask him if he is "afriendly" as in, unfriendly :p
