It wasn't illegal unitl 1913, I believe. You used to be able to buy it through the Sears catalogue, $1.50 would get you two vials of heroin and a hypodermic needle. It was marketed as the wonder drug of the 20th century, so named because it made you feel like a hero, hence the name hero-IN. One formula was meant to be taken by mouth, that was marketed by Bayer pharmaceuticals; it was mixed with aspirin and called Bayer with heroin, of course.
