  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Whether you are a fan of college football or not, it's great to hear the quarterback of the University of Florida say after defeating Bama to move into the #1 position as the best college team in the nation to say, "I thank my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ". On national TV.

Thank Him for what? Winning a football game?

I’m a little surprised at your reply to this thread PastorJim.

Are we not to give thanks, praise, honor and glory to God in all we do, for all that we are and in all that He has blessed us with?

Considering all the foul mouthed, prideful and arrogant athletes we’re subjected to on National Television…I find it quite refreshing and encouraging that this young man gives thanks and honor to God for his athletic talent and accomplishments.

Do you give thanks every time you cross the road safely?

Seeing as how I live in Houston, Texas...yes...I'm thankful quite often for a safe trip on the roads. Switching lanes is difficult enough...trying to cross 8 lanes of traffic is never an easy task here...^_^

I just left NE Ohio...and a couple weeks ago I had to drive in a snow storm for the first time in about 8 years...and I was thankful to get to safe, warm place after being lost in a snow storm for a couple hours.

I was also thankful for a safe and uneventful flight...both ways.

Thankful my family was safe with no major upsets while I was away...

...I really can't think of a day in my life I'm not thankful to God for His mercy, grace, providence, guidance, encouragement, strength, peace, comfort, joy and I could go on for just about forever giving Him thanks and praise...

The last thought on my mind before I close my eyes to sleep each and every night... is thank you Lord.

I guess those of us who are such a mess apart from Him...as I was...have a lot to be thankful for...:D

See...it's not so much a "performance" of giving thanks...but a heart-condition of thankfulness toward Him pretty much all the time.

I didn't say that what he said is bad. I just asked what he said "thanks" for.

Do you think it's possible that an unsaved person could have seen it and been given the impression that he was thanking God for winning the football game?

The Bible says to give thanks in all things. When was the last time he thanked Jesus for losing a game?

Yes! I'm so not a follower of football but I believe it was ESPN that did a piece on him a few months back and I thought then that he was a really neat person. He also does missionary work like his parents. I can't remember what all he did and what it talked about...I just remember thinking WOW!

And what would be so wrong with it if they did?

I dunno...perhaps he'll do the same when (if) they interview him after losing a game.

Hard to tell what the unsaved think...perhaps those with hard hearts thought him foolish...atheists more than likely considered he was thanking his "imaginary friend" as some atheist have said to me on several occasions...(which btw one atheist thought it his duty to save me from wasting my time talking to my "imaginary friend")

Some may have picked up a bible...or asked a Christian friend what Phil 4:13 is...opening an opportunity for a convo to share the gospel.

I'm sure there were many who thought nothing of it at all.

I'm not sure we should really concern ourselves a whole big bunch how people might receive it when we give praise and honor and glory to God...we can't really help what they think.

A relative of mine gave me the raspberries when I gave God praise...that was a reaction I certainly didn't expect.

Do you think Tebow giving thanks and the glory to God was a bad witness because it was just a football game?

I dont understand thank god in all things. Is in the same as for? If so then should I be thankful to God for all bad things as well such as my epilepsy, migraines, my husbands broken ankle, diarrhea etc?

On a side note if I woke up with diarrhea I could thank god for another day but Idk if I'd be thankful for the squirts.

It would be wrong because to portray God as that trivial is taking His name in vain, which is blasphemy.

That's another thing. It really bugs me when people take that verse out of context.

I'm not sure we should really concern ourselves a whole big bunch how people might receive it when we give praise and honor and glory to God...we can't really help what they think.

But so far, nobody here has even been able to point out what it is he's allegedly giving God "glory and honor" for.

Do you think Tebow giving thanks and the glory to God was a bad witness because it was just a football game?

Not a bad witness, necessarily, but not a Biblical way to use God's name and I don't think it was good for him to take Phil 3:13 out of context, either.

Yes, you should thank God for those things, just as Paul thanked God for his blindness.

Do yourself a favor and google a sermon by John Piper called "Don't Waste Your Cancer".

I know...it's tough sometimes to be thankful when we're sick or hurt and in pain...and/or in trial and tribulation...

I just spent 2 weeks with my aunt who suffered a very serious trauma and was in hospital for 2 weeks...then a nursing home for 3 more weeks and it will be months before she recovers...and at her age...a full recovery might not be expected...she may have some severe problems for the rest of her life.

I had many talks with her as she felt pretty angry and frustrated about her current condition and the prospects of her condition not getting a whole lot better.

I guess we can count our blessings...and give it to our God of all comfort...

2Co 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort,
2Co 1:4 who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.
2Co 1:5 For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also abounds through Christ.
2Co 1:6 Now if we are afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effective for enduring the same sufferings which we also suffer. Or if we are comforted, it is for your consolation and salvation.
2Co 1:7 And our hope for you is steadfast, because we know that as you are partakers of the sufferings, so also you will partake of the consolation.

I think you might be assuming just a bit much here...regarding what's in this young man's heart...and how others might perceive it.

How is blasphemy for this young man to take his moment in the spot light on National Television to proclaim Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and give thanks for his gift and talent as an athlete?

I don't follow football a whole big bunch anymore because I got tired of seeing all the foul-mouthed and bad behavior exhibited by so many athletes these days.

That's another thing. It really bugs me when people take that verse out of context.
How can Phil 4:13 be taken out of context here?

Php 4:13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

Does it bother you that this man considers it's Christ who gives him the strength and endurance to play the game...rather than in his own strength?
But so far, nobody here has even been able to point out what it is he's allegedly giving God "glory and honor" for.
Perhaps you should write him and ask him...but my understanding is (from my hubby who is quite familiar with this young man's public proclamations) that on or off the field...this man is a dedicated Christian.
Not a bad witness, necessarily, but not a Biblical way to use God's name and I don't think it was good for him to take Phil 3:13 out of context, either.
I'm thinking the 3:13 is a typo.

The 413 in my name is my reminder that apart from God I can do nothing...perhaps that's not so "biblical" either for an internet screen name?

Anywhoo PastorJim...I've been blessed by many of your posts...

but obviously we have differing PoVs here...:)...thanks for the convo.

I never said anything about what's in his heart. I was talking about his actions.

How is blasphemy for this young man to take his moment in the spot light on National Television to proclaim Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and give thanks for his gift and talent as an athlete?

How do you know that's what he was thanking God for?

How can Phil 4:13 be taken out of context here?

It has nothing to do with football. When I was in physical theraphy, it was hanging on the wall of the gym, as though it is refering to physical feats.

Does it bother you that this man considers it's Christ who gives him the strength and endurance to play the game...rather than in his own strength?

Where does the Bible say that Jesus gives us strength to play sports so that we don't have to play under our own strength?

If that's the case, then why does Paul say that we train like we're running a marathon, and not that we run the marathon under Jesus' strength?

Finally, if we were to play football under Jesus' strength and not our own, how is that not cheating?

Perhaps you should write him and ask him...but my understanding is (from my hubby who is quite familiar with this young man's public proclamations) that on or off the field...this man is a dedicated Christian.

That's certainly the impression I've gotten.

The 413 in my name is my reminder that apart from God I can do nothing...perhaps that's not so "biblical" either for an internet screen name?

I'm afraid that's John 15:5, not anything to do with "413" and John 15:5 is another one that's often taken out of context.

Anywhoo PastorJim...I've been blessed by many of your posts...

Thank you.
