Hi Philopateer,

It's great to have you among us  . Yes the Compline is a great prayer to meditate on especially before sleeping. I think they are all beautiful and its hard to say which one is a favourite. But I think for me, the sunset prayer or Vespers is pretty inspiring :)

For those who are not familiar with the word Agpeya, Agpeya is a Coptic prayer book of hours. Compline is a prayer said before sleeping. For those who want to know more about it :) , this website is good: http://www.agpeya.org/index.html

Rilian, www.agpeya.org, has the complete Coptic Prayer Book online and even has portions that are beautifully sung for you. Also, if you would like to get your hands on one, if there are any Coptic Churches in your area with bookstores, they will have them for relatively inexpensive prices. I know I payed six US dollars for mine.

Thanks, looks interesting.

I have another question for you guys. A friend at church who I've mentioned before has some family that go to a Coptic church. I noticed when she prays the Lord's Prayer during the liturgy she holds her hands out, held up and cupped. I would call what she is doing supplicating. She is the only one I've seen doing this. Is it a Coptic tradition?

Yes...I believe Ancient Egyptians used to pray in this manner. And then again, there's so many verses in the Bible that says to lift up your hands to the Lord. There's also a symbolism to it. I have to check it out.

The hands do not necessarily need to be cupped I believe. That's just a human being's tendency to fold his/her hand.

God bless.

Hi
A while back I picked up a copy of the Agpeya for 50c at a second-hand bookshop here in Australia. I am not Coptic (I am Anglo-Catholic, with a leaning towards Orthodoxy), but I would like to begin praying the Agpeya on a more regular basis. I don't yet have a favourite hour, but I prayed the Morning Prayer (Prime) today, and I found it very inspirational.

Hi erini,
thank you for the kind welcome. I thought the prayer book was an amazing find too, especially at such a low price. Truth be told, it was actually my wife who first saw it in the shop, and she instantly knew that I would be interested (she knows me well :)).
God bless,
Michael

Greetings my Orthodox brothers and sisters!
I, like Mick, am an Anglican. I have read through the Agpeya online and found it to be a powerful devotion. I was wondering if there was a place I could order it since the only one I have found was $40 and I had hoped to spend less than that.
Thanks for your help.

Hi AngCath,

The best thing to do is to go to a Coptic Orthodox Church near you and they would usually have a book store that is opened on Sunday mornings. The book store would have Agbeya prayer book sold at cheap price.

Here is the website to help you locate the nearest Church to you in the USA:
