Thoughts on penal substitution

I recently read Julian of Norwich's Revelations of Divine Love, and have come to appreciate some aspects of this doctrine, though probably not in the exact same way many modern evangelicals do. Rather than seeing it "objectively", I could see it as phenomenological of a certain kind of medieval piety that evolved into penal substitution.
