• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

It's a pure disorder thats all but assurance won't help you. You need intervention like a SSRI Zoloft I like the best and ERP therapy for when you have questions like this one pop up into your head you know not to fo reassurance seeking instead you ride the storm out.

Hi Worrier,
The answer to your first question, within the context of treating the OCD, is that you do absolutely nothing. You don't attend to that doubt or question because if you do you'll be giving it such a measure of validity that your brain will latch onto it even more.
Ruminating is the compulsive activity of a form of OCD called "Purely Obsessional". This is when you spend hours and hours in mental debate or trying to reassure yourself that the fearful and disgusting thoughts just aren't true. It's a kind of mental warfare. Ruminating about the "theme" will get the obsession more embedded in the mind and that will make it seem more and more valid and threatening.
A Spike is sudden thought or idea that pops into your mind which intensifies the anxiety. It will usually be related to your root OCD fear.
Yes, Spikes can certainly lead to more thoughts because when you are trying to mentally argue or fight against them your OCD will usually come up with yet another, "what if" or "what about this?"
It all becomes a vicious cycle of a. Spike, b. anxiety response, c. compulsion/rumination and then once again a. more spikes... b.. more anxiety and c. even more rumination.
The Rumination and reassurance seeking is what must be resisted even though the anxiety will push you to do those things.
Hope this helps explain it a little better.

What do you do when you are in fear that you are 'becoming' what
you think? The fear that you really think that way even when the
thought is absolutely disgusting to you and you hate it and dont want it?
What is ruminating? What is a spike? Can these lead to other thoughts?
Thanks,
