In my interpretation, the "righteous" includes those who not only believe, and trust in Messiah, they also follow Him in diligent obedience as a habit in their lives, all as their expression of love for Him. They may inadvertently fail from time to time, but they do not make a habit of it, and instead, diligently fight against it. It is no different than an earthly wife diligently loving her husband.

The "unrighteous" are those who walk in disobedience as an ongoing habit or because of carelessness in their lives, whether or not they believe in Messiah. The "self-righteous" are in this category. They follow their own traditions which are not grounded in YHWH's Word, yet believe they are righteous.

IOW we have to do as you say to qualify. NO DEAL! The Bible presents a much better deal. I'm a bargain shopper and know a good deal when I see it.

He says that these believers do not understand Him (8:43), their father is the devil (8:44), and that they do their father's desires (8:44)! If they would only remain observant to His Word (8:31, 39, 47) and avoid sin aka "transgression of the Law" (8:34, 1Jn 3:4), they would be of YHWH. But even though they believe, they rejected obedience to YHWH's Torah, and Messiah concludes that they "are not of YHWH" (8:47)! Thus, belief plus obedience is identified as true love for Him (8:42).

lets not forget, 3 times in Acts Jesus appears to paul encouraging him to keep going, and no correction to his message either...in 18, 22, 23.
