I'm all for owning guns, but what on earth would one do with an assault rifle? I've been contemplating buying a shotgun, myself. Thought I'd might like trying skeet shooting.
For as much as many of our fellow Americans like to complain about and negatively stereotype the French, I don't share their opinions. If I were to ever become an ex-patriot and take the time to learn the language, I'm fairly confident that I'd have an easier time of fitting in France than here.

Agreed. I'd like to live in Switzerland. I don't disparage people from other countries just because they're from that country like some people in America do. France is beautiful and I hope to see it when I go to Europe next year.
As far as what one would do with an assault rifle, I imagine they'd shoot things like they would with any other gun. There's no functional difference between any of those rifles and say a mini-14. It's all purely cosmetic. They LOOK scary and that's why they're banned in California. But they are no more lethal or dangerous than hunting rifles or your shotgun. I can see why some people think there should be a line drawn somewhere when it comes to gun freedom, but why draw it arbitrarily between two rifles that function in exactly the same way?
