The answer to your debate ... well I put in a good thing. Jandals in NZ are thongs in Australia and in the UK and America they are called flip flops or flips. It doesn't matter where u come from but it is the same thing ... just felt like bringing this thread and other threads up so other people can take a look at them if they want to :D

When i went to Hawaii in 1989, they had these 'thongs' that did not have the strap bit, but instead had a sticky surface. You pealed off a protective cover to expose the sticky surface of the thong then stuck it on your foot. I have no idea if they are still around!

Now thats really interesting. I didn't know that ... maybe I should look up that on Wikipedia for you Frambo ... it would be interesting to hear where the term 'Jandal' came from :) I wonder where the word 'thong' came up. Any ideas to that????

I found some pretty cool info on what New Zealanders call 'Jandals' and what Auzzies call 'Thong' or 'Thongs'

"In footwear and fashion, flip-flops (also known as jandals in New Zealand, chappal, Hawaii chappel, Qainchi (scissor-like) chappals in India and Pakistan, thongs in Australia, slip-slops in South Africa, and the South Pacific, slippers, pluggers, go-aheads, ojotas or chancletas), are a flat, backless, sandal consisting of a flat sole held loosely on the foot by a Y-shaped strap, like a thin thong, that passes between the first (big) and second toes and around either side of the foot. They appear to have been developed based on traditional Japanese woven or wooden soled sandals."
