The larger tragedy is what this case revealed about the degeneration of our times and the hollowness of so many people in "responsible" positions in the media, in academia, and among those blacks so consumed by racial resentments and thirst for revenge that they are prepared to lash out at individuals who have done nothing to them and are guilty of no crime against anybody.

What the OP seems to forget is that the Duke rape case came in the wake of a number of young women being raped, going missing or being killed.

Remember the runaway bride? No one criticized the media for covering that story as if she had been abducted before the truth came out. But when it's a black stripper the media has to get all the facts before they present anything. In both cases the media was deceived by the "victim", but only one received criticism and it wasn't the one with the pretty, middle-class white girl.

Got pretty fervid down there on the Durham campus. The confection Nifong spun satisfied academia's social construction of reality. A tasty treat indeed. One might almost suspect the professors who signed that notorious letter of condemnation were eager to sample Nifong's confectionary skills.

(not so happy now as the stomach ache is setting in)

A missing person case and an alleged case of rape on a college campus, and how the media responds to those two events, are completely opposite. The media has a responsibility to notify citizens of missing persons, whether it be local or national. The media has no such responsibility commenting on rape cases in any manner which might affect the fair trial of the accused. It's obvious the media did that, possibly at the instruction of the DA, who should be fired for what he's done to those young men.

The media often reports on cases before all the facts are known.

Also, the DA did nothing wrong. He investigated a case of rape. Rape is a serious issue that needs to be treated very seriously even if at the expense of those involved. His investigation revealed the discrepancies in her story that lead to the charges being dropped.

If someone claims they were raped in your house by you, your life will become very miserable regardless of whether or not it's true. It's unfortunate, but that's just how it is.

That's all well and all, unfortunately instead of conducting an investigation in a civil matter, he tried the case with the television stations and local and national black activists acting as the jury. That is an undeniable fact. It is wrong, and he is responsible whether a) he allowed it to happen or b)he started it. He should be fired and be investigated by the bar, to possibly remove his law license.

PLEASE!

As a lawyer and a public servant he decided to go after these kids without the proper evidence.

He botched it up. I hope he is disbared for his actions in this matter.

As for the lame excuse, there were other rape cases and blah blah blah, instead of jumping on the aha this could make my career bandwagon, the proper thing and leagl thing to do is to keep everything close so the case would not have any holes or actions that can be used to get the "bad guys" off.

...........it also helps when you don't withhold exculpatory evidence. I hope he is disbarred as well.

Do you watch your local news. Every night they'll talk about some crime and show the suspect(s) and talk to a lawyer or an police office. It's hardly unusual that this case made the news. The fact that it became national news is unusual, but the DA has no control over that. This case became national news for a few reasons 1) it was a very slow news week, 2) other similar sexual abuse cases in recent news cycles and 3) people love to see young white boys get into trouble (it sells).

I don't recall the DA ever giving very much information to the news. Most of what we saw was speculation. Also, at the end the DA is the one who discovered the truth that she lied.

People complain about how the boys were treated. They were treated like the primary suspects of a crime. A crime that the DA later determined to be fictitious.

Honestly, I didn't follow this case very closely, everything I hear about the DA or the media in this case seems to be speculation and questioned motives.

I wanted to add that but the spelling had defeated me.

Exactly, if he had not given into the election year mentality and did his job of gathering all evidence, I seriously doubt those boys would have been charged.
