  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

This was an unforced error...

CHICAGO - Republican 2024 presidential nominee Donald Trump in a controversial and combative appearance at the National Association of Black Journalists Annual Convention took swipes on Wednesday at Vice President Kamala Harris's racial identity — a move that comes as excitement swells for the Democratic contender.

"I didn't know she was Black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn Black, and now she wants to be known as Black," the former president said of Harris, who is on track to face Trump as the Democratic presidential nominee. “Is she Indian or is she Black? Because she was Indian all the way and then all of a sudden she made a turn and she went she became a Black person.”

Trump questions Kamala Harris' racial identity at NABJ, says she 'happened to turn Black'

Or maybe he really didn't know. Which is possible, but it's an unnecessary error. Someone should have been watching him to stop that kind of thing.
Kamala has identified as both (either or) at different times ... so it is confusing ... I could care less what she identifies as ... the democratic party is leading us down the road to communism and THAT NEVER ends well ... NEVER.

That could be a thread. I expect there is one somewhere here where such sentiments could be profitably pursued. This is not it.

This is about Trump's evident mis-step at his press conference yesterday.

She is Asian. She's also black. Doesn't seem that that great a demand on Trump's mind to understand.

so it is confusing
To someone who has a difficult time with the concept of having parents with different races, I suppose. Is that the problem?

Haven't heard the red card played in quite a while. Or was that humor? Hard to tell with those guys sometimes.

In today's world one can "identify" as anything they want ... whenever they want ... genetic makeup doesn't matter ... until someone wants to use it politically ... then all of a sudden it matters.

Try identifying as a Native American when you want rights on reservation land.

Confusing to whom?

oh
To those who don't accept the term "identify as" ... These days one can identify as anything they want and can change that whenever they want ... it has become fluid.

Whereas before
Race encompasses inherited, characteristic traits. Ethnicity refers to cultural origin. Ancestry is simply a line of descent.

Do you understand how obtuse this comes across as being? You're hardly the only one to espouse such a position, so I'm not picking on you in particular, but... seriously? You've never known anybody to celebrate - even identify with - two different branches of their heritage?

There have been white skinned people that have "identified" as black ... I'm just pointing out that how some view themselves now has changed from how they viewed themselves in the past. I'm a proponent that there is one race .... the human race. I don't care what color a person is ... nor what their ethnic heritage is.

It's not based on heritage anymore ... it's based on what one claims as their identity ... and that can be anything and also can be changed at any time .... it's fluid. You know this is true .... we all do.

As far as Kamala goes ... in the past she has herself has "identified" as black, indian, Jamacian or a combination of the three.

No, I don't know that to be true. Those white people who "identified as black" like Rachel Dolezal were mocked.

Right, because that's the makeup of her heritage.

Who even CARES what color she is or what identity boxes she checks? What has she done? What are her policies? How are things going under Biden/Harris. That's what matters.

So what do you think the "inherited, characteristic traits" of Jamaicans and South Asian are? Genetically, how would you distinguish them from say a person of Northern European ancestry?

Hmmm. Unforced error? The first question put the spotlight on Trump's past statements. He was on the defensive right from the start.

I think the unforced error was in attending this conference unprepared for the hostility.

It would seem to be very important to the GOP nominee, otherwise why did he bring it up?
