I think Frank Peretti is an amazing writer. He's probably my all time favorite. I've read all his books (except for House, just bought that one). His style of writing reminds me a bit of Stephen King, sans the explicit violence and sex.

I really like FP's books because not only does he incorporate relevant messages in them, he entertains while doing so. I really get into his books.
I really liked House, but to just let you know, Ted Dekker wrote the majority of that book. If I remember correctly, Peretti wrote the first 9 chapters and then Dekker finished out the novel.

I need to read my Peretti books again... especially the Darkness books, The Oath, The Visitation, etc. ^_^

Very interesting!

I too enjoyed the Peretti books - read them when they first came out. Like the other poster, Monster and House have put me off his works. Dekker on the other hand is also another good read - some of his get a bit weird but on the whole pretty good.

One thing we do need to be aware of is developing our theology apart from the bible. I'm all for fiction - Eugene Peterson (The Message) says for every good theologian we need 5 good novelists - and I agree. But as I mentioned - not all we read can be taken as truth. For example (and this may upset some), praying against territorial spirits is not our role (as Peretti would suggest). The other thing on Peretti (now that I'm writing) is that we need to be careful of looking too closely at the power of evil and trying to guard ourselves from it, rather than living the positivly in Christ.

Anyhow, my two cents.

I think he's great and I love Ted Dekker. They are in their own class in the genre they write in.
I enjoyed Peretti's books except for the one (I think) about a mining town.
About Ted Dekker's books - awesome, very different and I think you have to have an open mind. My favourite was Blessed Child.

I've read a bit of both Peretti and Dekker and think that each one has strengths and weaknesses throughout their works and each has written some excellent books and some mediocre ones. For example, I liked several of Ted Dekker's books but really disliked Showdown. The premise was fascinating, but he mishandled it badly.

I read "Piercing The Darkness," and I heard a dramatic reading on cassette of "This Present Darkness." The dramatic reading, with all voices done by Peretti, was pretty good. As a comparison, I also read "Angelwalk" (by Roger Elwood), and I liked Peretti's works better.

I have, by the way, read House and been terribly bored and disgusted. The whole book involves running through the house for no reason, freaking out every other page, and playing on cheap horror thrills until the badly contrived ending. It was disappointing- I expected better from both authors.

Also read Angelwalk and while informative I agree not as good as Peretti's.

I absolutely and totally loved This Present Darkness. It was so intricately plotted and there were so many interconnecting strands that, no matter what, I was mightily impressed that everything in the book was connected and/or had a beginning and end. Astounding writing! (Also, while I do not theologically agree with absolutely everything Mr. Peretti does, the whole idea of demons literally sitting on your shoulder and trying to get to you, and actual spiritual battles going around made a deep impression on me and totally revolutionized what I envisioned "spiritual warfare" to be like).

I also enjoyed Monster (although it was more science-fiction than scary, but I own it and do like it), and I absolutely loved House (was very scary and weird), although to be fair that was co-written by Ted Dekker, of whose works I have not read.

I need to read the second Darkness book now, and then go on to some more of Peretti's things, because This Present Darkness, House, and Monster are the only things I've read from this great writer.

Happy birthday! Have a blessed one!

Every so many years, the genres of books I read are replaced with a new one that I have never experienced before. This helps to broaden by outlook!
