My cat Dreamer is really sick with what seems to be a cold. It's been over a week and he's stopped eating, his breathing hard, he just lays around and his eyes and nose are runny. The internet says that the only treatment is antibiotics from a vet but I don't think I can afford it. I don't know what to do and God doesn't seem to be answering my prayers for him to get better so maybe you guys can help somehow? I know he's "just a cat" but he's been with me since I moved into my place and I hate seeing him like this. Right now he's in the bathroom with the humidifier.

Please pray he gets better soon. I don't want to lose him.

He's not just a cat. I'm sure he's so loved by you and he's special. I pray that he gets better and you receive a breakthrough in funds to afford a vet. I'm sorry you're going through this. Have faith. Trust in God that he will heal your precious Dreamer <3

I'd take him to a vet, if possible. Keep the cat comfortably warm and rested. Let himself have something healthy to eat when he's ready.

@brinny @ForgivenPrincess
Thanks.

Internet said to try to feed him wet food since the smell is stronger and it'll make him want to eat. He did come running when he heard me pop the can open but after I poured the food into the bowls one of the other cats started throwing a literal hissy fit and scared him off. I've tried offering him my soup bowl to lick out but he wasn't interested. I do know I've seen him drinking water so there's at least that.

My 15 year old cat went off her food, so I got some special food from the vet that didn't have lumps in it, put a little water with it, mixed it up and fed her through a syringe (without the needle in it of course!) Use a 10ml one and give him two lots (20ml). My cat lost 500 grams which was a lot for my little cat, but after feeding her 20ml night and morning for around three weeks, she put on 300 grams. Behind the cat's back teeth there is a gap where the syringe fits. Hold its head up, insert the syringe, and give a little bit at a time. Doing it that way prevents the cat from spitting bits up all over you.

Maybe you should get him some food while the other cats aren't looking. He needs to eat as soon as possible.

When I got home the wet food was gone. All my cats love wet food so I'm sure they all got a taste. Too bad I was at work so I wasn't here to observe. He's in the bathroom now napping on my jeans in front of a humidifier. Might try to offer him some before bed and see if he takes it.

Dreamer's huge so I can tell he's losing weight when I pick him up. I'm afraid to force him to eat or do anything because the last time I did to wipe his nose he was all out of breath from struggling. He still wants to be petted because when I try to look at his face he lifts his head like he does when he wants his chin scratched which gives me some hope.

@HereIStand
Thanks for the offer. I'll have to see what happens. I'd still have to make an appointment and what they want to do. Internet says he'll probably need specific prescription antibiotics. No home remedies I can find. I don't feel right about taking strangers' money anyway......

I also have a large and heavy Burmese cat and he had an eye graft to deal with an ulcer. I had to put eye ointment in his eye for the next month after the operation to harden the graft. He didn't like it and would move backwards every time I tried to get his head still to put the ointment in. I asked the vet how he was able to keep the cat still while he looked into its eye. He showed me. He put his arm around the cat's back and his hand under its head and held the cat's lower jaw with his thumb and finger. I put my cat on the ironing board to get him at the correct height and backed him up against the wall so he couldn't move back any further. It worked a treat. Then with the other hand I had to get his eye open to get the ointment in. That took a bit of practice as well, but I got the hang of it. With your thumb and finger holding the cat's jaw, you are not gripping it around the neck so as to choke it. My wife helps by holding the cat for me, and so there are four hands dealing with the cat.

Yeah I'm capable of holding onto him, with some resistance. I just don't want to stress him out when he's already having trouble breathing.

He's decided he doesn't want to be in the bathroom anymore and is sitting next to the register in the dining area. Moved the humidifier and tried to spoon-feed him some wet food but I guess he's not hungry. Will try again before bed.

Fyre, Have you consulted with a local SPCA, etc (?)
I know we've received discounted vet care when we needed it.. There may be something comparable in your area..
Peace.

You will have to separate the cats. Get dreamer in another room and feed him. Also get an eye dropper of water and shoot it down the side of his mouth. A little at a time. This will keep him hydrated.

You can also add some Gatorade or pedialite, if you have some, to the water, this will give him some electrolytes, and a little energy. You can also give him .5MG of Benadryl per pound to help clear his sinuses. Cats don't like to eat when they can't smell what they are eating. You could warm up his soft food a little to make it smell stronger and make him want to eat it also.

My wife had her animal rescue license when we lived in another state, and she said dehydration is the worst thing for any sick animal. There are many different solutions you can mix at home and administer.
They need electrolytes and liquid. If he is drinking, that is a good sign. You can mix this solution from stuff you might have in your kitchen
1 Qt. water, 1 Tbsp sugar/honey/ or karo syrup, and a half tsp of salt.
Add 3 to 4 tablespoons of this to his drinking water.
