  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

This is probably the wrong place..but how do you pray?

Im going through a rough time at the moment, and through all the church sessions i have been to, it has only been temporary relief...and this is probably a really silly question to ask...but how do you pray? is there a set way? i feel severed from god and alone and wish to be back in contact with him...

Sincerely
Martyn

Martyn, there is no "set way" of praying. Prayer is supposed to be a conversation with God. God wants to be in contact with you. He wants to be your friend and your help and comfort. Just talk to Him as if you are talking to your best friend, which, in essence, God should be your best friend.

A simple way to keep your prayers structured is the ACTS acronym. If you look at the Lord's Prayer, you can see how this acronym is modeled after it.

Adoration- Adore God and praise Him for who He is
Confession- Confess your sins and ask for forgiveness
Thanksgiving- Thank God for blessings in your life
Supplication- Request what it is you need from Him

I hope I have helped! God Bless! You are in my prayers!

In Christ's Love,
~Erica~

Confusious,

don't be afraid to make your supplications first. A lot of the time you don't feel like praising God right aways, and that's ok. God understands, and it's a lot easier to do that when you get everything that is on your mind out of the way, then you can focus on Him and praising Him a lot easier. If I've confused you, sorry! lol! I didn't mean to, it's just something my Worship Leading prof mentioned before... :)

What helped me to be able to pray is reading the Psalms and just getting into the Word. The better you know God, by studying his Word, the easier prayer becomes. Now, I just talk to Him as often as I can. :) God bless you, and I will pray for you!

Matthew 7:7 NIV said:
Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.

Here is a method I teach to people that don't know how to pray. Seems silly at first, but it DOES work.

You get two chairs and face them towards one another. You sit in one chair looking at the other one. THEN, you imagine Jesus is sitting in that chair. Speak to Him. Speak to Him just as you would your best friend (since He is!). Don't worry about saying something wrong. Don't worry about saying the correct words in the right order...Just speak to him. Tell him your problems; He will give you rest. Tell Him your dreams; He will make them true. Tell Him EVERYTHING. Confession is so good for your soul. He already knows your troubles, He already knows your dreams....Tell Him anyway.

Then thank Him for listening.

As you get comfortable speaking with the Lord, you will find yourself praising HIM. You will find that you'll want to read your Bible and find out what HE has to say to you.

God Bless You.

These are all such good and helpful answers to your questions. I would just like to add a couple of things that have worked for me. First of all - always be honest with God. He knows everything that is in your heart and mind, anyway.

I believe that the Lord desires fellowship with us. Just like an earthly parent wants to spend time with their own children, our Heavenly Father wants to spend time with us. Years ago, I began telling the Lord, I want to know You. I want to know who You are. He honored that prayer, and began to reveal to me things about His character, through His word, through other Christians and through the witness inside me of His Holy Spirit.

There is so much to discover about God. The more He reveals of Himself, the more you want! God bless you!
