This is NOT a pro-lynching song

I listened to Candace Owens' podcast today. She has zero problems with the song or the video. Jason Aldean filmed in front of the courthouse because it is the closest one to his home, according to Candace Owens.
Candace Owens doesn't seem to be the most normal person. She's more lin the category of Kanye and Margery Green.

I take offense with Aldean's song

I struggle to understand why anyone would "take offense" with a song. I guess some people just like being offended.

Whats wrong with being offended by expressions of ideas you find abhorrent?

It encourages tribalism and hate.

We have lots of conservative book banners in my community, currently derailed by lawsuits.
Do you understand their point of view, or is it just progressives you take issue with?

I am not saying it should be banned. I think that public pressure and exposure are fine. We can discourage such media without banning it.

I suppose if one wants to waste energy by being offended at other people's views, that's certainly their prerogative. But it's completely counterproductive.

I'm wondering what exactly it is that people find "abhorrent" about the song though. For reference, here are the lyrics.

Sucker punch somebody on a sidewalk
Carjack an old lady at a red light
Pull a gun on the owner of a liquor store
Ya think it's cool, well, act a fool if ya like

Cuss out a cop, spit in his face
Stomp on the flag and light it up
Yeah, ya think you're tough

Well, try that in a small town
See how far ya make it down the road
Around here, we take care of our own
You cross that line, it won't take long
For you to find out, I recommend you don't
Try that in a small town

Got a gun that my granddad gave me
They say one day they're gonna round up
Well, that **** might fly in the city, good luck

Try that in a small town
See how far ya make it down the road
Around here, we take care of our own
You cross that line, it won't take long
For you to find out, I recommend you don't
Try that in a small town

Full of good ol' boys, raised up right
If you're looking for a fight
Try that in a small town
Try that in a small town
Try that in a small town

See how far ya make it down the road
Around here, we take care of our own
You cross that line, it won't take long
For you to find out, I recommend you don't
Try that in a small town

Try that in a small town
Ooh-ooh
Try that in a small town

Do you have any idea how much tribalism and hate is championed by progressives?

I have no idea what you're talking about, so I cannot comment.

I am not saying it should be banned.

So do you agree or disagree with CMT pulling the music video?

I think that public pressure and exposure are fine. We can discourage such media without banning it.

On this point, I think we mostly agree.

I have a complete opposite opinion about Candace Owens than you do.
I believe that there is a strong and significant percentage of conservatives who agree with her.

I find glorification of vigilantism problematic. It’s my issue with superhero movies as well.

I suppose it depends on just how bent out of shape you get. I think its ok to get a little emotionally involved at abhorrent expressions. It shows you are still human and care. But obviously you dont want every little bad thing to derail your peace.

He and his raised right boys would incapacitate a person for burning the flag? Now I understand Aldean getting a little offended. But getting violent? Thats definitely taking offended way too far, dont you think?

Not sure how you think this glorifies vigilantism. Unless you're in favor of people being sucker-punched on the sidewalk, old ladies being carjacked, stores being robbed and cussing out cops.

It’s my issue with superhero movies as well.

You do realize that superhero movies are fictional, right?

Fiction can promote bad values, or even promote evil. It doesnt need to be real to accomplish that.

No disagreement there. It just seems that many people thrive on being perpetually offended.

Agreed. I think that many Americans in general have made the American Flag into an idol, and I find this particularly problematic for Christians. I think it's entirely possible to respect the flag without idolizing the flag and as such, I support freedom of speech that permits people to disrespect the flag, even though I disagree with them.

Perhaps, but do you really think superhero movies are promoting bad values?

I think you’re reading a lot into it. It doesn’t say what they’re going to do.

Using just this song, what happens if I try any of that in a small town?

I’m well aware, that doesn’t mean they don’t glorify vigilantism. The only two that came close to actually discussing the real ramifications of a vigilante going through the streets and being the judge-jury-executioner was The Dark Knight and Captain America:Civil War and both of those pulled up way short of doing any meaningful analysis of the weighty topic.

We don’t need people to be encourage to take the law into their own hands. We have the criminal Justice system and police officers for a reason.

Bad artistic values? For sure.

But I was just contesting your implication that fiction is or should be categorically beyond causing offense.

That is not true. And if it were true it would be sad.

Great art, which can include song and film, absolutely promotes values, which you may respect or abhor. It makes you examine your own life and choices. It reveals the situations that other people are dealing with. Its not just something to distract you for a couple hours.
