The good news is that the co2 produced doesn't come from fossil fuels.

Assuming that wasn't a joke, it's the CO2 that is the problem, whether from fossil fuels or garbage. In any case, a significant proportion of garbage is plastics made from fossil fuels.

The point is that energy recovered from trash means that much less from fossils fuels. Also much of the plastics are recycled although some does get burned. Science is close to developing a single recyclable plastic that will replace the types that cannot be recycled. Plants that burn trash sort it out pretty well before burning, land filling the stuff that cannot or should not be burned.

I wouldn't hold your breath - it's very unlikely that any one type of plastic can replace more than a fraction of the varieties in use (that's why there are so many varieties), and it's a long step from having something that works in the lab, or even proof-of-concept plant, to economically replacing existing commercial plastic manufacturing lines.

Heading in the right direction perhaps, but new plant and fungus-based materials have great promise too.
