• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

So a few days have passed and I thought my OCD was getting better.

I was playing guitar and trying to record a song for a friend. Then the thought of blasphemy attacked me again. I tried to counter it and thought to myself: 'no, it's not blasphemous' and then I thought:

'okay, record this song and it is not blasphemous'.

Guess what happened? My computer messed up and I couldn't record that song. So now what?

Get a new computer - then re-record your song. Forget the other thoughts in your head. You are doing fine. Keep up the good work.

I agree with Seajoy.
I am by no means making light of the situation.. With that said, If I went to clean my house and found that I was out of all my cleaning supplies. Does that mean I shouldn't clean? NO way I would go buy some more cleaning products. Sometimes things happen that are purely coincidental but I understand your struggles I have had to re-think some of my own thoughts as well..
I was reading a post a while back where someone believed that turning the oven on was blasphemous.. It is just a run of OCD or jumbled thoughts. You will make it through. I believe in you!
Hope this helps ~Brandi

I did end up recording it though. I guess there's nothing wrong. Like you said, I guess I should just forgot the other thoughts in my head and carry on with the recording.
You are getting it! Great job.....I'm proud of you. You have just started your therapy. Soon it will be a natural thing for you. You are on the road to recovery. You can do this! :)

I liked what you said about some things being purely coincidental. There really ARE some things that happen that "seem" maybe significant when you're obsessing, but as Brandi, said, in reality, are just coincidence. We really have to discern here and not interpret a coincidence, maybe even a scripture, as some kind of "sign." The fact that coincidences DO happen can really mess with your OCD struggles if you let it.

Thanks for the responses everyone. Regarding the parts I bolded, I felt it was quite significant.

Earlier today I sinned. I decided to pray, confess/repent and ask God for Forgiveness. Then I went downstairs to watch The Simpsons. Once I turned on the television, Homer asked Lisa, "do you forgive me" and Lisa said "No". At first, I got quite anxious, confused and started associating Homer and Lisa's dialogue with my own sin. I gave myself some time to calm down and came to this conclusion:

My sin is forgiven because of the Grace of God. My sin has nothing to do with Homer and Lisa's dialogue. If Lisa did not forgive Homer, that has nothing to do with God's Forgiveness and me. It was purely coincidental. Am I correct?

yes, you are correct. This is a perfect example of how things that are purely coincidental messes with our OCD struggles.
