I just got back from the SE District's Leadership conference, and this quote made me think of this morning's communion. There were three stations (it was a really large group). All three had pastors (male) giving out the host, but one had a woman offering the cup, and the other had a cup with juice instead of wine ("for those who are sensitive to wine", as it was explained). So I pretty much only had one choice among the three offered.

I envy you your ability to attend such things, synger.

In the case where it would cause physical harm (allergy to alcohol) or a brother/sister to stumble(alcoholism), I am willing to go along with grape juice in communion. Certainly not, under any circumstances, to serve the entire congregation. We must be sensitive to our bretheren's weankesses and be careful not to make them stumble. After all, we are here to uphold one-another.

So, how did the rest of the conferrence go? This would be... LMCS?


Hey, Strawberry, Cincinatti is in Ohio, right? East Egypt? I've heard it described by the initials B.F.E and though the last is Egypt, the first two are definately NOT east (LOL)! Then again... the area where I live is described with the same three initials too (LOL)! So, we have something in common. You're right though. I wouldn't mind living back there. In fact, I was working on moving to either Charlotte NC. or South Bend In. It all fell through though. Oh well, as much as I complain, the weather isn't that bad, except July and August. Though this year, September might be in that list as well.

Do you use a machine to breathe at night? My step-daughter has sleep apnea- she was just diagnosed this summer and sleeps with the machine. I think it is helping her.

Yes, I use a machine....and it has helped quite a bit. I still wake up sometimes during the night. I think it's the annoyance of the mask.

I don't know if SD wakes up due to the mask or not. Her mother refuses to send the machine with her when she visits us on weekends. Sigh- yet another battle looming... we've reported her to the hospital anyway. Hopefully we'll get it next weekend.

One of our Pastors, our Circuit Councelor, has a machine also. He told me that it helps a lot with his sleeping, his blood pressure, and snoring (his wife is sleeping much better also).

LOL, when I was a boy, Mr. Baker, next door, used to snore very loudly. The windows used to rattle it was so bad. I really mean it too! We always knew when he was asleep that way (LOL)! In fact, Tommy Baker had a tree house in his dad's Avacodo tree and we used to sneak up in it when his dad was asleep. Mrs. Baker was cool with it as long as we kept quiet. We spent many-a-night up in that treehouse. One of the very few things that my older brother allowed me to tag along with him on. I think he did it so I wouldn't tattle on him. Not that I would have. Besides had I done so, it would have ratted out three quarters of the boys in the neighborhood. One simply never lives down such a thing. All the same, I was really delighted to be included.

At the Youth Gathering I was in a room with another pastor. He lasted only 3+ hours before I drove him out with my snoring. That was with my retainer and Breathe Right strips.

I told the organizer that I didn't mind others in the room, but they probably couldn't put up with me.

The wife tells me I get like that when I drink whiskey. We were at a Blue Grass concert all day, and I drank whiskey. Lord have mercy on Eileen!

Our church doesn't "do" contemporary music... but we do occasionally have "Bluegrass Sundays". The pastor's son-in-law plays everything from guitar to banjo to mandolin, and knows a number of fun doctrinally-sound bluegrass songs.

Of course, this is also the guy who is involved whenever we have a "Chant Sunday", and we pull out the medieval chants. He often serves as our cantor for the sung-response Psalms.

I was raised singing and playing bluegrass music. My father plays the mandolin and guided my two older sisters and I into learning to play and sing in harmony. At one point when I was in high school and college we used to play in some of the little local festivals and at church from time to time.

My sister ended up marrying a man who is a professional-level mandolin/guitar/whatever player who has played with bluegrass and new acoustic groups in NW Ark. My niece married the son of a banjo player who also is really into bluegrass.

Whenever we have family get-togethers, it inevitably turns into a jam session out on the screened-in porch.

As for myself, I play guitar, mandolin and bass but I'm not really into it as much as I was before I got married and had kids. After about ten years all the songs started to sound the same to me. How many G runs can you do in a lifetime? I dabbled in Irish/Celtic music for a while at college with some weird friends and I think I would like to play jazz/new acoustic but my skills just aren't there. You really need to have some kind of formal music background or education to play jazz and all I have is self-taught, play-by-ear kind of skills. My favorite acoustic stuff for listening now is the old-style jazz manouche / gypsy jazz / Django Reinhardt kind of stuff.

I never would have put Lutheranism and Bluegrass together, but it seems as though there really is a connection. I've seen William Cwirla post Allison Krauss videos on his blog, and I know Matt Harrison plays the banjo and goes to Bluegrass festivals.

Edit: Hehe. I just googled (lutheran bluegrass) and got 123,000 hits.

I have lost a lot over the past ten years. Back in high school and college I was playing 2-4 hours almost every night. So, when I return home I tend to listen and appreciate. My fingers are just not as limber as they once were. I think that is called old age.

But ultimately I play for my own enjoyment, not to meet someone else's standard... I tried that for many decades and it doesn't work.

Two of our grandchildren have guitars, but they don't live around anyone who really plays so it is difficult for them. If they moved here! But the granddaughter really likes the Peasall Sisters.

Most of you folks would love the Community Church's music here in Lewiston. The pastor plays banjo, his wife sings, sister-in-law the guitar, they have a mandolin player, sometimes a pianist, and sometimes a drummer. The pity of it is they're Ana-Baptists. They invited me to watch the fireworks in Hayfork year before last and join their combined congregational party. The whole family was there, (all the men are pastors) and it was a jam session and sing-along all day. Tons of fun.

Last week I had dinner over at the pastor's daughter's house (she and her husband are my daughter's godparents). We pulled out the hymnals and sang together. He's got a lovely tenor, she's a pretty solid soprano (when she knows the tune), and I can sight-sing alto unless it has a lot of accidentals. So the three of us had a blast!

Ed is working with the youth, and looking for more contemporary, but still doctrinally sound, songs to teach them. Someone gave him a Maranatha! songbook, but he didn't know most of the songs. I went to a college youth group (in the Dark Ages of the 80s) where we sang almost exclusively Maranatha! praise songs. So we went through his songbook and I pointed out the ones I could remember and we sang through them. Then we "crunched" them to determine whether they were appropriate to teach the youth. Many of them were; text straight from Scripture.
