I just talked to a friend who was held up by the fire. Looks like the mill is a total loss. the fire was so hot it peeled paint on buildings hundreds of feet away from the complex. How it didn't set the log deck on fire, let alone all the finished lumber, I don't know.

No, sir. I skipped today because my daughter doesn't want me to be away from her for too long. 10-15 minutes is about all she can handle. She's still very clingy and terrified after her accident.

The poor thing. Mine would be the same (and I'm sure you're sleeping in her room, too) and after a close call like that, I can imagine you're just as happy to not be too far from her, either!

Prayers for continued healing and recovery for all of you. Our babies are precious and need us, no matter how grown up they think they are.

To update things here, our little angel has just been extended an offer from the best school in the area (yay, her!), which is her first major step toward a quality university and vet school. It's very different here, but her work these past years and near perfect grades and behavior have paid off. Thank you, Father!

Add to that, of course, that we are that much closer to getting the house completed and fully habitable before winter. The idea of being so close to the Lutheran sem in Cambridge really is nice and the opportunities and cultural events abound, as well. God has blessed us in so many ways, it would be nice to be able to slow down for a bit so my head can stop reeling. With so much around us to be done, it feels as though taking the focus off it for one minute would be irresponsible.....does that make sense or do I need more of a break from this extreme makeover than I imagine? :help:

In any event, we're swamped with deadlines and details, exhausted and living like gypsies, yet we have no reason to complain; only praise. How's that for a bundle of confusing contraditions? ^_^

I hope everyone else is doing OK and I do keep you in my prayers when I get the chance to read what's going on here.

I pray that all goes well. and she is comforted by The Holy Spirit  We can always trust in God's grace. He will see her through it all, and mommy as well

Your 'bundle of confusing contradictions,' Porter, sounds like the recipie for some really fond memories and satisfaction. I do hope you took lots of pictures.;) Before and after pictures of a large project are always fun. Such a project as you are involved in also has the family, heirloom, connection with it. I'm sorry to hear that your Mother-in-law's beloved floors had to be removed. Hopefully, you will be able to make a new memory in that area (sans the mould and mildew of course;)). Sadly, one of the draw-backs to Jolly-'Ol is the damp and all of it's baggage. By the by, you did check the floor timbers for dry rot, right? Damp is great for one's garden but it's really hard on one's house.:p

Well, the Mill owners have said that they will rebuild. In fact, the damage fortuneately looks worse than it actually is. The facility just may be able to resume some limited activity in the next week or so (depending of course on the fire investigation and the insurance company). Excellent news for our whole county and Weaverville in particular.

I keep hearing that the Employment Develoupment Department has programmes for retraining. So, on Monday, I'm going to Redding to inquire about them. The office in Weaverville has no information at all. I have to get a job, eventually, and driving seems to be out of the question.

Good news, Stude!
Prayers for your job search. Why is driving out of the question, though?

As for the saloon floor, it will be replaced, but this time it will have a good ol' American cherry wood tint to it. ;) That will live in close proximity to our walnut kitchen cabinets and the oak staircase, but all the other flooring downstairs will be ceramic tile to help tie all the wood together and make the most of the low light in winter. No way am I going to try to maintain wood flooring on this level in such harsh traffic conditions. Wellies and riding boots track in too much muck, water and gravel to risk that and I can already see that is going to be a huge issue for much of the year.

Ever heard of the Severn Bore? We popped over to the west country and Wales this weekend and watched the tide force a wave up the river, which resulted in quite a strong flow for quite a while in the opposite direction. It was fun and what a gorgeous weekend we had for it. :)

Wellies... now, I haven't heard that in a while. Wellington Boots are an inimitably British style of country footwear that's almost impossible to find here in the 'States. When one does the price is dear.

Saloon, as in drawing-room? I always liked the French way of spelling it as here in the U.S. the double-o equates with Wyatt Earp ordering a whiskey!;):p But then, a Brit wouldn't like the Froggie way of spelling it (LOL).:p Your idea with the ceramic Tile sounds like a very sound one. Since you'll be dealing with a lot of water and muck, it might be wise to stick with a very small tile near the back door. That way no one breaks their... um... sacroilliac.:o;):p

Driving seems to be out as there are not sufficient jobs here to go around. Therefore, the employers demand a spotless, perfect driving record. Sadly, mine isn't. So, I'm looking for another venue. I was considering (are you ready for this, LOL) the Paralegal training offered by U.C. Davis.

However, the state would have to assist with grants, loans, and etc... I have two strikes against me though. Actually, three, I'm male, (percieved) white, and a bit old to be restarting with school. People have told me though, that Obama has pushed through legislation that provides for just such a re-training. So We'll have to see.

By the by, Porter. Thanks for the link about the Bore. Very interesting, that. I wonder if they get much salt-water incursion on the river because of the wave effect. Those surfing pictures are a laugh-and-a-half, especially the one where the folks on the 'porch' got doused.:D:D:D:D:D

I was in Arkansas near Hot Springs last week. My baby got married. I drove out and back. Long drive. That is an interesting part of the country. I'm still amazed at the number of Christian references that I see when I travel in the south. I saw numerous billboards with Scripture verses on them in TN and AR. Very cool!

I brought back some Spaetzl product (Lutheran beverage).
