PW, the end of the era of shuttle flights will end in June when the last one is launched. After that there will be no more shuttle missions.
President Bush made some kind of direction to end the shuttle program and President Obama upheld this. The focus is going to be more on exploring the planets further away from us and to develop commercial space travel.
I think it is a bad move on our part if you ask me. I am more acutely aware of this as the space program has totally fascinated my oldest son. He is down there now for the launch. He purchased tickets to it so will be closer in than those trying to catch a glimpse of it from surrounding neighborhoods and highways.
I have witnessed the space program from early on and stayed up to watch Armstrong step onto the moon's surface. I have visited Cape Canaveral twice.
So many things have been developed thanks to the space program. It is going to hard to imagine life with this new approach.
Meh I really wish I could see the last shuttle launch as I've never seen one before. But I just don't think we could make it down to Florida in June. Oh well
I had a very strong interest in the space program when I was a kid as well. I many times found myself wishing I had been born in the 50's so that I could have seen the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo programs.
