Yea although I added too much pumpkin so I compensated with a bit more flour and I don't know if I have enough time to finish it before the service. Right now I'm getting myself sick with anxiety so I'm just thinking if I don't have time I don't have time and I'll just let it sit in the oven.

i'm sorry, but the words "cultish" and "erroneous" are not words i normally associate with the Amish.....can you please explain?

i finished making the hotdish i'm taking to church for our Reformation dinner - it sure smells good, and it looks good - i just hope it tastes good....please pray that nobody gets sick from it!!

Cult - extravagant devotion to a person cause, or thing: also, the object of such devotion.

The Amish, Annabaptists, have made an extravagant devotion of their Ordnung. Almost to the point of making it as important as their bible (Luther's translation). Also, their religious leaders have a very strong control over every aspect of their lives; what they wear, eat, transportation, work, living quarters, etc... Every aspect of their lives is controlled by the Ordnug and their leaders.

As to error, for instance, they don't believe in real presence. The Communion rite is practiced, largely, once a year as a rembrance of Christ. Not to mention at least a dozen major doctrinal and theological differences between us. If they differ with the accepted confessional Lutheran doctrines and theologies, they are in error.

I'm speaking in generalities here because the Amish differ quite a lot from order to order and sometimes from one church group to another. Therefore it's hard to say, "all Amish believe this..."

huh! wow, i had absolutely no idea!! that is very interesting, thank you SO much for the information!! and just so i know my brain is thinking in the right direction, Amish is the same as "annabaptist"? i didn't know what "annabaptist" was....but, if amish don't use electricity, they why do they have a spot on an internet message board, if they can't get on line to see it or participate in it? or are they also considered mennonite? i know they use electricity....we have a whole BUNCH of mennonite here where i live....

The people who log into this board are largely Mennonites. There are a number of branches that spread out from Zwinglii originally. Two men (I forget their names:o) became the founders of the Anabaptist movement. Calvin, also studied under Zwinglii and started the Hugenots as well as the Presbyterians. According to this site the Anabaptists include the Nazerines, SDA, Mennonites and (though we'll never hear from them) the Amish. Mennonites and Amish both come from two men Menno Simons (Mennonite) and Jakob Ammann (Amish). The more radical of the two was Jakob Ammann. It became a favourite punnishment for these people to give them a 'ten minute baptism' or drowning if they wouldn't recant. But I degress...

Thus, one will see the Mennonites on this board and never the Amish. You see Menno's followers were less extreme. They, when the mechanical age arrived, continued on. The Amish saw what was occuring with the machines and refused them. "Keep ye separated... put out that evil one from among ye..." is a byline of the Amish. Hence, they won't use electricity from the grid. With such would come utility bills, inspections by the county, and interaction with the English (you and me). With Automobiles and trucks, it's a pride/equality thing.

A very good book on the Amish is Bernd G. Langin's, Plain and Amish (An Alternative to Modern Pessimism). Lehman's.com has a good collection of Amish books as well.

By the by, I believe that the word 'Anabaptist' means to rebaptise or rebaptiser.

The Amish have good tasting chicken though...and gazebos.

Gazebos, furniture, etc... great cooks too! My mother had an old cookbook of Pennsylvania Dutch (Amish) recipies. Problem is, it's in german and I can't read it (LOL)!^_^

how do gazebos taste?

:hahaha:

sorry.....couldn't resist!!

yes, the amish are completely OUT OF THIS WORLD cooks.....so are the mennonites - we have a pantry, a bakery, and a restaurant, all owned/operated by the mennonites, and their stuff is just fantastic....

the history lesson about the difference between amish and mennonite is REALLY interesting....i've always been fascinated with the amish, and i had several on my dad's side of the family that were mennonite (i remember any time one of them came to visit my grandparents, she would run around like a crazy person hiding the ashtrays and making sure the house didn't smell like smoke, LOL) - but i never really knew that much about either side....

so thank you very much for the lesson!!

(and as an aside, i feel like such a moron this afternoon....i COMPLETELY forgot to go to bible study this morning....sigh....my friend called me from work and said "oh hey, my dad and pastor frey were wondering what happened to you this morning?" i was SO exhausted from everything that we did yesterday i completely forgot all about it!!)

Oh, sorry about the History lesson.:sorry::o I don't mean to sound like a know-it-all, it's just that when I'm intrigued about something, I research it thoroughly. Years ago, I trained horses for Carriage Driving. The Amish were the suppliers for everything having to do with Driving. Thus, I got to know them. Wish I'd found a way to get to know them better and visit them.

Sometimes I miss the horses so much it hurts...:sigh:

We have a group of Mennonites not far from us. This group wears the pastel dresses that kind of look alike and the men wear hats, suspenders and black pants. They dress kind of simple. They have a bakery and the stuff is delicious. We went to Blue Ridge Ga a couple of weeks ago and we rode the train. We ended up sitting with a family of Mennonites, you wouldn't have been able to tell if the women hadn't been wearing their bun things, they dressed normal.

My oldest stepson and his wife graduated from a small Mennonite university in Kansas by way of athletic scholarships. They're both doctors now, so I can't fault their contributions to the education system.

I think Aibrean jinxed me with all her talk of her root canals. My dentist has yet to decide if I'll need one and I am not going to be happy if I do. Laughing gas isn't allowed here, so they'll have to tie me down or knock me out if we go down that route. :sorry:

That's encouraging, but I hope to not have to go down that road at all. I'm still sore from what he did today! :D

I don't know if he could handle my wearing earphones. He's a chatter box and even offered to show me the result of his drilling. :o I passed.

My dentist offered me a parrafin wax treatment for my hands while I had mine done (they also do it for regular check-ups).

Dental spas are amazing :D

I think I would (if I had a choice) switch dentists lol. That's a bit over the top.
