We did alot of those things and when my son started reading himself we set 1/2 hour before bed as reading time, and he was only allowed to read during that time or lights out. It really was a treat for him and sometimes he would ask to stay up a little late and I would allow him to stay up, only to read though.

turn off the tube and read yourself ...

Og Mandino has 7-10 small books , can be read in 1-2 nights ,
be good for Jr. High or Teens ...
