  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

So I thought it might be interesting (funny?) to post experiences where people have said things that you think aren't really appropriate to you about your pregnancy.

You know how everyone had an opinion and feels obliged to share it!

I was working with a woman, and she knew that I was pregnant, although I haven't put on any weight yet, and to those that look at me, I don't look pregnant, but I am only 12 weeks, so I don't know what else they expect!!

Anyway so she says to me, "Are you sure your pregnant? Are you sure the test wasn't faulty?"

Nice, so reassuring!!

The people where I am doing my clinical placement freaked out when I told them my hubby was 32! They thought I was 19! So yeah having a four yr old and another on the way and looking like I am 19 does freak a few people out.

I have also been asked if I am still with the father when they find out I have a 4 yr old!!

Umm, we've been married for 6.5 yrs, then I get "How old are you??"

I get the age thing a lot too. Yesterday I went into our local leagues club to use the atm to get money for the train and the receptionist didn't want to let me in because she thought I was underage (the legal age here is 18).

I still don't look pregnant so no comments really. The chemist was kinda shocked when I bought prenatals the other day too. She was like 'You're pregnant? But you look great!' Since when do pregnant women not look great.^_^

Lesse...

Some things we got that were honestly strange:

"Well, I wouldn't worry. Until the baby makes it to month 3 I wouldn't set my heart on having it... she could miscarry!"

Uhm yeah. Thanks for that reassurance. (My SIL had miscarried her first the week they said that!)

"You know how that happens... right?!"
No, I just assumed it was in the water supply...

"Well! We know what you two've been up to!!"

Really..? (how totally inappropriate... and yuck)

"Are you ok with that?"
No, I figured I'd be really ticked off...

"Are you keeping it?"
Lemme think... no? :p

"Are you sure you're pregnant?!"
No, I figured it was some kind of strange fake stuff that even a blood test, 2 urine tests and an ultrasound would be wrong on... Yeah, I'm mental that way..! Meanwhile I think "idiot..."

"You are?! Well, you aren't showing! When is it due?!"
End of May..
"Really? Are you sure it's due in May?"
No, I figured the charts and missed period, implatation bleeding and ultrasounds were wrong...
"I'd think you'd show more than that...!"
Mhh.. ok...

LOL

I've had 3 pregnancies and I don't think I've received a single strange, weird or inappropriate comment!

Oh, wait, my MIL when finding out we were pregnant with our third asked if my hubby (her son!) was too wimpy to get a vasectomy. This from a woman who had SIX kids herself and who said we were done having kids? Hubby and I still haven't officially decided whether we are done yet or not.

LOL, some of these are really funny (some are just rude).

Well, I haven't gotten any weird comments cause I've never been pregnant (I just like to stalk these sections to see what you all say:p), but reading this over made me think of one that I heard said to someone else.

My boyfriend at the time and I were just starting a new Bible study with people we didn't really know at all. We had been going for a couple weeks and then one week one of the ladies who attended with her husband brought in sono pictures to show the Bible study. My then-bf looks at her and says something like "wow, you're really skinny for a pregnant lady." :o

Luckily she laughed and didn't seem to take offense at it. Even after just a few weeks, it was kind of obvious that he didn't really think before he talked. I was embarrassed for him (somebody had to be:help:), but looking back it was kind of funny. Now, if she had been upset at the comment, that would have been different, but fortunately she wasn't.:)

don't worry about the 'huge' comments angelsgirl, almost everyone starts to get those comments towards the end...

Though in my last pregnancy I used to get a lot of 'you're tiny' comments, except that my son was measuring 4 weeks ahead - no I actually was huge then!

And I don't know if this counts, but now I get a lot of 'now that you're not trying you'll probably fall pg really easily/quickly' comments... so annoying!

Here is another one!
Today all the ladies were talking about me being pregnant, and another lady came over and said "Is she pregnant? I just thought she had a pot belly like me!"

Nice :)

Oh noes!!!
I swear some people don't think before they speak!

My sister now refers to me as Fatty or just Fat... I don't really care... I know she doesn't actually think i'm fat. But seeing other people's reactions to it is really quite funny!!! :D

ROFL! I got a comment like that the other day in class. I even made a point of getting a pin to put on my backpack (though it is in English) for my bus rides with all the schoolkids (so I'd be given more leeway maybe without having to get rude) that says 'I'M NOT FAT, I'M PREGNANT!'...

I overheard someone in class say "She's pregnant? I thought she'd just added on some weight!" :D

No actually, if I had the luxury of not layering as much as I have to for the weather, they could tell... maybe come spring I can crank out the other cute outfits I have and show off my belly some.. but until then - I'd sooner be layered up and warm and looking fat than looking pregnant and cold. LOL

"Are you sure there's a baby in there?"

No, I'm just a freak with two heartbeats (that's what I was thinking anyway)

"You think you're tired NOW. Just wait till you have that baby." This made me more angry than any other comment and I heard this one A LOT as a preschool teacher. Yes, it's true that pregnancy lack of sleep is different than new baby lack of sleep but STILL...talk about your feelings being completely ignored and invalidated. I swear I will never say this to a pregnant woman.
