Although I am leaning towards theistic evolution as the explanation for the way that God created and sustains life, I am not certain where original sin fits in. (Although I want to make it clear that I believe in something called ancestral sin and not original sin, which is within orthodoxy, I am using the term original sin for convenience). Can any theistic evolutionists explain when original sin entered the world?

The concept of original sin revolves around a paradigm of crime and punishment- There is a great Law, and every action is either following it or it is a sin. The word sin would be better translated as "missing the mark" as in archery, or straying from God's will one way or another. Our state of Sin does not have to result from the violation of a single rule, but rather describe a situation we acquired over time as we claimed free will and used it to depart from God's will.

For me, I am a TE who believes that some given time ago, God took a hominid pair and gave them spirit effectively enabling them to communicate with and choose to obey or disobey God. One day they sinned, and because of that they lost contact with God. Through the ages, because nobody was able to approach God enough to truly know Him and be holy in Him, they were all enslaved to sin. And then God sent Jesus, who was a man and yet God - fully able to represent God to us sinful humans. When Jesus showed us God and demonstrated His power over death and showed the potential future of humans as God-blessed eternal beings, He gave us the choice and opened the door to us being freed of our original sin.

To me that's how I explain original sin within an evolutionist framework. I mean, even for YECs there's no "sin gene" that's biologically passed down from human to human - it's something spiritual, and so any biological theory should not substantially affect the question of how something spiritual started and propagated.
