Theater thing is getting on my nerves

You know that in some cultures kissing is standard greeting among freinds?

Now some actors really have sex on screen (for the movie). That's real sex.. I don't see how it relates?

About your AIDs comment, that is a different definition/connotation of pretended. The english language is amazing in it's complexity and abstraction.

As I Said, lots of defintions. In yours, check the difference between 2a and 2b.

from www.dictionary.com "
pre·tend /prɪˈtɛnd/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronuncia 1.to cause or attempt to cause (what is not so) to seem so: to pretend illness; to pretend that nothing is wrong. 2.to appear falsely, as to deceive; feign: to pretend to go to sleep. 3.to make believe: The children pretended to be cowboys. 4.to presume; venture: I can't pretend to say what went wrong. 5.to allege or profess, esp. insincerely or falsely: He pretended to have no knowledge of her whereabouts. –verb (used without object) 6.to make believe. 7.to lay claim to (usually fol. by to): She pretended to the throne. 8.to make pretensions (usually fol. by to): He pretends to great knowledge. 9.Obsolete. to aspire, as a suitor or candidate (fol. by to). –adjective 10.Informal. make-believe; simulated; counterfeit: pretend diamonds. "
The english language really has a lot of subtlety, doesn't it?

Well, if Zondervan, Lighthouse, Berean Books, etc..., published books that contain immoral content, you would certainly have a point here. However, they don't. Therefore, your point is moot.

I didn't say religious book companies, I meant secular ones.

When the Protestant Reformation was in full swing, the order of Society of Jesuit was found to counter act the movement.

When the Bible was translated into the languages of the common people, Medici learning (secular), Renaissance, theater play (Shakespeare) were introduced to compete with the Bible learning.

For almost a thousand years (during the dark ages), Europe fell into spiritual darkness during the height of the Papacy. Was it a mere coincidence when the ordinary people could finally read the bible, the various forms of entertainment came about?

Provide some evidence that entertainment "competed" with the Bible. Entertainment has always been around since Ancient Greek times. Entertainment can either be bad or good. It is amoral.

Maybe it would be best if everyone put their Bibles away for a minute and just took a look at the clinical effects of movies, TV, and music, on the human mind.

First some clinical observations. A; The optic nerve is the largest direct nuerotransmitter to the brain. B; The auditory nerve is the second largest nuerotransmitter directly to the brain. C; The conscious mind can only record optic or auditory sensations that last longer than 1/25th of a second. D; The subconscious records and stores almost every nerve impluse it recieves, no mater the duration.

With that short explaination given, let me explain the basic requirements for hypnosis. The first requirment is the rhythemic fatiguing of any nerve of the body. The second requirement is an attention getting getting device. The third requirement is that it usually requires is a willing candidate.

When you attend a movie theator, watch a TV or DVD, or listen to music you are, in most cases, a willing candidate. The screen or sound becomes the attention getting device. So now where does the rhythem come in you ask? When you watch a movie in a theator, what your conscious mind tells is you that you are watching a continuious moving picture. NOT SO! The image you precieve, is made up of single still frames flashing at a rate of 1/30th of a second. Just slightly faster than your conscious mind can record the black spaces between the frames. This constasnt flashing fatigues the optic nerve, while the subconscious records every image with vivid clarity. With a TV, the image is made up of rhythemic lines scrolling down the screen at a rate of 1/30th of a second. If you wish to prove this to yourself just photograph a TV image with a still camera at a shutter speed greater than 1/60th of a second and you will freeze those lines in the still image. Now it becomes even easier to fatigue the auditory nerve with repetitave sound and the rhythem of the music. Of course the louder the sound, the faster the auditory nerve will become fatigued. Once again the subconscious mind recordes every sound including the words spoken as well as those of the music. The net effect of this ability of the subconscious to store all this information that your conscious mind missed, is to create post hyponotic suggestions that will affect your future thoughts and actions without you even being aware of what is happining. (If you don't belive that, ask yourself why advertisers spend billions of dollars on TV advertising each year?) The more often you are entertained this way the greater the amount of what you see and hear is stored in the subconscious and the easier it becomes for it to affect our future actions and thoughts. It should also be noted that the heavy beat of popular music causes a rise in the heart rate and, blood preasure, while at the same decreasing the blood flow to the frontal lobes of the brain where our conscious thinking and reasoning takes place. It is also interesting to note that clasical music, whether sacred or secular, has the opposite effects.

Perhaps you noticed that I said "in most cases a willing canidate is required." Here are some common exceptions. When therapeutic hyponosis is prescribed, and the patient is unwilling, all it takes to produce the desired hyponotic state is to put the patient into a darkened roon and turn on a strobelite. When the TV is used as a babysitter the younger the child the deeper into the subconscious the posthyponotic suggestions are placed thus making the effects much longer lasting. If you are near enough to only hear a TV or sound system, eventhough you have no interest in what is being transmited, you are still affected to a lesser degree. And don't forget the 'Chinese Water Touture.' The candiate was certainly unwilling, yet that steady drip, drip, drip, of the water had the candidates entire attention, and produced fatige that dorve the candidate insane.

With the forgoing information, is there any doubt why there is an epidemic of juvenile crime, loss of morality, increased sexual activity in all ages, more drinking, more drug use, more divorce, less respect for parents and authority of any kind, family values at an all time low, and a greater "me first" attitude than ever before in the course of history?

Now I will digress for a moment to Biblical principals. The greatest gift God gave to man at creation was/is his mind. It is with the mind that we are able to communicate with our Creator God. We might call the mind our "communications center" with heaven. To expose the mind to such powerful tools as we have discussed, is to allow Satan to gain a foothold in our thinking and mental processes. When that happens we have effectivly "short circuted" our communication with heaven. I can't speak for anyone else, but for me, I need an open, working, heavenly communication center 24/7.

Respectfully, your brother in Christ,
Doc

Well, i personally hate going to the movies cause i have to sit still for an hour or more, but usually on Sunday afternoons, we take the kiddos to see a kiddy movie (yay). I don't feel like I'm doing anything wrong especially when I see the pure joy on my babies' faces. I don't think God has a problem w/this either. Now if we were going and seeing a rated r movie that might be a different story. Our Lord may frown upon that. But it's the movie that is bad NOT the theatre.

You have to be careful about what movies you watch. I was never arguing with that. However, not all entertainment is bad. There is nothing "sinful" about going to the movie theater. Also, people don't believe that saying that your guardian angel will wait outside if you go to a movie theater. That is a lie and proves the flawed logic of the theater thing.

Hi Mankin,

I guess that perhapes I should have written more declairative statement, but I didn't think anyone would want to read several pages of information, and besides I didn't have the time.

Additional points to consider:
Every commercial that comes on, whether it be for a coming attrations in a theater, or products and services or new shows on the TV, every bit of that information is stored in the subconscious. How many times have you heard someone say that the commericals are worse than the show?

Each time a person, especially children, enters a theater the inhibitions against going to a moviehouse, for ANY reason, becomes lowered. Ergo; It becoms easier to go to see the wrong kind of movies at a future date.

If I may make an analogy; If you find yourself swimming in a cesspool with sharks, even if you are sucessefull in getting out of the cesspool, you still have to get rid of the smell.

Respectfully, your bother in Christ,
Doc

Well, better not let your kids outside because all sorts of bad stuff happens out there. Or to school, because they will be tempted by drugs/etc (yes, even at Adventist schools, my siblings who went to both said that the number of serious drug users were about similar to a public school).

Yep, you cannot protect your kids from everything. They just have to fight temptation. The same goes with the theater.

You may not be able to protect your kids from everything, but I doubt that you would tell them to go play jacks on the freeway, or play catch on the edge of the Grand Canyon!

As for home schooling; Praise God that there are some parents who care enough about their children to make the effort.

By the way, how do you think God would teach "His chidren," or where would He allow them to play?"

Respectfully,
Doc

That is not the same thing as going to the theater. You can control what movies your children see at the movie theater.

Is "entertainment" Biblical?

I think EGW spoke on the difference between entertainment and recreation.

If Christ were to burst the clouds, would you want to be found at the cinema being entertained?

These are questions one needs to consider.

Entertainment is not bad in itself. It can only be bad when it effects your walk in Christ and is immoral. Anything can effect your walk in Christ, it doesn't have to be a theater. You condemn the theater, Jon, but you play GTA. No offense, but you are contradicting yourself.
