  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What do you think is the most significant or the most important aspect of the virgin birth? This is an open question; I'm interested to see what people think.

Soli Deo Gloria

Well, the most significant is Who was born (God). There were other miracle children promised by God, but ... I don't see how this can be more significant without this aspect.

Something more ... historical comes to mind, too. The Virgin Birth is cited in one Gospel text and strongly implied in another. It becomes quite a problematic issue to integrate into "radical histories" of Jesus, and so is often mythologized. Whatever the liberal arguments against it as "real history", its attestation and thus early importance is a loud trumpet that the church considered Jesus more than a man quite early.

I guess I should just quickly clarify that I don't mean who was born. I mean what is significant about Jesus being birthed by the Holy Spirit and Mary, as opposed to Joseph and Mary.

You might rephrase it, What is the significance of Jesus being born of the Heavenly Father over against an earthly father?

Soli Deo Gloria

Simply:

Heb 4:15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as [we are, yet] without sin.

i think His physical inability to trace His family tree thru an earthly dada's line back to Adam, thus fulfilling the whole 'last Adam', keeper of the cov of works, etc. deal is the big kewlness fer me.

He must be both man and God to accomplish the task set for Him, the salvation of His people. Man had sinned and man must pay the penalty. He came as a man, the obedient servant of God, and lived a perfect life of righteousness on our behalf. As God His blood is eminently sufficient to satisfy justice. He could not be both God and man if He had been the son of Joseph. Add the fact that it fulfilled prophecy. Unto us a child is born, a man, unto us a son is given, the Son of God. Isa. 7:14. 9:6
