We have broke the record of the number of mass shootings from the high of last year.

Something to cheer about? Not really. It may be time to look at our gun culture and guns in our culture and work on a new way.

I've given you points for optimism.

Coincidentally, in Australia yesterday, there was government action following on from a mass shooting a year ago-

The national cabinet* agreed to implement a national firearms register — a move the government said was the most substantial update to firearm management systems in almost 30 years.
"The register will address significant gaps and inconsistencies with the way firearms are managed across all jurisdictions," the prime minister said.
The national cabinet will work towards the register being fully operational within four years.

We need accept that no tragedy will be enough and that hard look is not going to happen. This is normal and acceptable.

I know that is how most people in the US look at it. I want to be hopeful we can change, even if history is against it.

It's a misplaced hope. We're to the point where memes once used to mock the NRA, picture implying kids dead by mass shooting with the text worth it and the NRA logo, are being posted in seriousness by pro-gun accounts. It's time to accept realty, this is acceptable to the US, this is normal in the US, nothing is going to be done about it.

Actually I doubt it. I think most of the people, that supports gun right are getting more extreme.

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

Many people claim these are two separate thoughts when it is one sentence. A sentence is

The first definition of the word sentence:

a set of words that is complete in itself, typically containing a subject and predicate, conveying a statement, question, exclamation, or command, and consisting of a main clause and sometimes one or more subordinate clauses

"a set of words that is complete in itself."

So why would one part of the sentence indicate that "A well-regulated militia," has nothing to do with "the right to keep and bear arms?"

The sentence would seem to indicate that members of a well-regulated militia have the right to bear arms, not cowboys who want to punish others by murdering them or otherwise take the law into their own hands. "Well-regulated" would seem to indicate that it is not illegal to be required to register one's firearm(s). People should look at the entirety of the sentence and not simply cherry-pick the part of the sentence that would allow them to keep and or carry unregulated firearms. Even if they claim the rights of a cowboy, their firearm(s) should be regulated.

Having the freedom to kill as many people as one can before there is an armed response is not a right that the Constitution protects. Nor do the "stand your ground" laws protect one's right to execute an unarmed citizen IMO.

Guns are incapable of committing violence. They are not sentient. They can no more be violent by choice than a tree or a butterfly.
People are violent. Why is there no respect for life and property? Why are families declining and crime overall increasing? Why do half of marriages end in divorce? Why are 40% of children born out of wedlock? Why has the number of LGBTQ teens increased 10 fold from the boomer generation to the genz? Why do people feel entitled to do the criminal things they are doing? Find out what has happened to people in the US over the last 50 years to cause them to be more violent, immoral, and ungodly. You will have the answer.

Are sentient human beings incapable of committing violence with guns? Do guns not being sentient mean that sentient human beings are incapable of committing crimes with them? As a society, should we keep the door open for sentient humans to commit mass murder with guns? ```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````

You know - you couldn't have diverted my attention from the real issue more easily than if you were flashing your underwear.

You're right of course - guns alone can't kill.

They are however facilitators.

Their presence makes killing easier
Their presence makes death more likely
Their presence is a temptation to use them
Their presence makes it more likely that they will be used.

Guns, by their very existence, increases the probability of death and injury.

I think that pretty much sums it up.
And answers the question perfectly.

For everyone else, the "Don't care" of my response was about the percentage of children whose parents weren't legally married at birth. There is no reason to think this connects to mass shootings in any way, shape, or form.

Nope, it's too soon to politicize such a tragedy. We have to wait until the next one, when it will be even to sooner to politicize it.

Nah, we're entering into the "worth it" era for mass shooting. What's a few dead kids measured against not having to fill out more forms or wait longer to get a firearm?

Yep this is the real issue.

And can we please talk about the drag queen problem?

17 days into 2024 and in a town of 15,000 there has been 5 people shot and 4 deaths.
I copied this from the paper on one shooting.

Greenwood Commonwealth:
The death of a Greenwood man at a relative’s home Friday was caused by many shots fired by multiple people, police say.
Doniel Nellum, 44, was slain in the driveway of a home at 609 Mimosa Street.
“After Mr. Nellum got off work around 3:00 from Milwaukee Tool, we do know that at least two people, possibly three — two shooters and a driver — followed him to his mother’s house or grandmother’s house on Mimosa,” Greenwood Police Detective Sgt. Dwight McCaskill said Tuesday.
“As soon as he pulled up in the drive, they started shooting. They started shooting when he was inside the vehicle.”
McCaskill said Nellum was able to get out of the vehicle but didn’t get far.
“We don’t have an exact count of the number of rounds, but it was between 50 to 70,” McCaskill said. “He was hit multiple times — not sure of the places, but hit multiple times. He was dead at the scene.”
McCaskill said the guns used were assault-style rifles.
He said police do not know whether the shooting is related to the Thursday shootout at U.S. 82 and Mississippi 430 near McDonald’s that killed 19-year-old Shackia Stewart and wounded another 20-year-old man.
“Both investigations are still ongoing,” he said. “We are trying to put the pieces together.”

I think it's all about priorities. Sadly In America, human sacrifice seems preferable to any measures to reduce gun violence. Gun rights are prioritized above human lives. Our fear compounds the problem because Americans do not use reasoning at the ballot box, we vote with emotions. And voters seem to be the biggest impediment to making America safer. Voters accept this sacrifice of lives in order to somehow feel secure in their being.

I am not sure they are more violent, immoral, and ungodly. But I am pretty sure that a sense of common good, solidarity, compassion for each other and altruism has been diminished by extremist rhetoric. I am not even sure how much of this hatred for others is due to Russian chatbots influencing our social media and how much is actually homegrown. I do know that when politicians capitalize on on "us v. them" thinking and fears we are a long way from the Gospel. When we admire and elect people who personify our vices, then violence, immorality and ungodliness are a consequence.
