The only time you guys wax literal is to tell us we should be "burning witches" (which isn't even in the Bible)

True, the Bible doesn't specify the method by which to kill them, just that they are to be killed. Burning just caught on for that purpose.

Hello --

The only time you guys wax literal is to tell us we should be "burning witches" (which isn't even in the Bible), or should be marching off to liberate Jerusalem of the infidels (which was done in spite of the Bible, not in respect to It), or putting heretics on trial (which was done by a splinter group -- so much so, that the name of this group carried a specific name of a specific country -- the Spanish Inquisition).

And in conclusion I believe that we can all agree that atrocities have been committed in the name of both religion and science in course of our very short history. Though my next point I doubt many will agree with but here it goes anyway: these atrocities have been committed because both doctrines are under the control of humans. If history has taught us anything, it's that we are ordained to get things dead wrong and quite frequently. Our motivations are not always humble or innocent, and our goals are not always in the best interests of all humanity. We [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse] up and will continue to [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse] up until we focus on elevating each other and pursue issues that will lead to a greater future for us all. Unfortunately for our race, we seem to be incapable of accomplishing such a feat.

Just out of curiosity, what sort of atrocities do you count as having been done in the name of science?

I agree, if only there was a teaching or philosophy that addressed these issues.... ;)

Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.

I SAID HI NATHAN.

Sorry I missed it -- been busy catching up after my last "vacation."

And with metaphor, religion is frighteningly variable in its interpretation. (Frightening to literalists, anyway.)

Well, by definiton, if they could comprehend metaphor, they wouldn't be literalists.

No -- these atrocities are committed because of this doctrine:

1 Timothy 6:10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

See that phrase, "many sorrows"?

That includes seven sorrows in 1986 -- (want their names?).
If history has taught us anything, it's that we are ordained to get things dead wrong and quite frequently. Our motivations are not always humble or innocent, and our goals are not always in the best interests of all humanity.
Just out of curiosity, this seems to be a general rant. Why did you choose my response to Zoot to post this?
... up until we focus on elevating each other ...
You guys have elevated yourselves about as high as can be elevated.

I can't think of a single thing -- not one -- that is more arrogant and narcissistic and prideful and downright disgusting as officially labeling yourselves 'wise men'.

That, to me, is the absolute summit of scientific trash.

I honestly can't imagine what motivates you to respond in such a manner. My message was of reconciliation - for both sides to take time to reflect. Yet despite my humble intent, you find the most irrelevant idea and use it against me. I honestly wasn't ranting, I was gesturing. If you didn't get the focus of my post, I would recommend that you go back and read it again because you've yet to post anything that effectively refutes my argument. When you stated "you guys" I'm guessing you meant those who support science. We only elevate ourselves to the heights reached by the accomplishments of our studies. We are not bound by the inadequacies of human thought but expanded by the parameters set by mathematics and physics. As I posted in a previous thread, humility is important in the search for answers. Question > Hypothesis > Experiment( observation > test > control ) > result > conclusion.

We don't have all of the answers, and as a species we may never have them. Science is a study, not a thought, an idea or a hypothesis. Its a system to study an observation and through this we will continue to learn much from the universe around us. Will we get things wrong? Absolutely, we constantly do.

"I can't think of a single thing -- not one -- that is more arrogant and narcissistic and prideful and downright disgusting as officially labeling yourselves 'wise men'."

-How about this: People who label themselves knowledgeable in subjects they do not study; who elevate themselves as knowing all of the answers when it's absolutely untrue; and those who can not even bring to question their own beliefs and admit the idea that they may, in fact, be wrong. I can do that. Can you? Doubt it.

Well, none of us have claimed to have any special spiritual knowledge revealed to us by the Holy Spirit -- that'd just be crossing the line.

Blackballing you from the club? ;)

So was Jesus'.

Are you interested in His message?

If not, your message can take a hike too.

Yea, you're definitely very "Jesus" like. Instead of accepting other views and ideals, you completely discard them. If Jesus actually existed, his message was more profound and uplifting than the watered down version of his current fanclub. I don't have to believe in God to appreciate the philosophy of the written word. Just as I don't have to understand Gregorian Chant to feel comforted by the sound nor do I have to understand every note of Beethoven's 5th to be moved by his message. I put no blame on religion as at its core, it can be a positive influence in a person's life. Its unfortunate that in the hands of ignorant people it has become a means of casting our fears, prejudices and natural tendencies towards others. Good luck in your pursuit of ignorance. You've almost mastered that.

On topic...yea, sure. The universe can fit into a period if converted into energy.

What is religion going to do? Beat people with a wet noodle. It is science that comes up with weapons of mass destruction. Science does not seem to have any problem with religion if they can sell them weapons and make lots of money.

IF Jesus actually existed? Maybe you should do a little research and put enough effort into this to find out if Jesus was a real person or not. Otherwise people may disregard what you say if you know that little about the subject to even know if Jesus was a real historical person or not.

Unfortunately as far as history is concerned, Jesus' existence had yet to be proven. He isn't spoken of for hundreds of years after his supposed death and the accounts are not of eye witness account but of folklore. His story is seen more than once in civilizations predating the Bible. Anyone can disregard my posts. I could care less. There's no historical data of credible nature to support his existence. Now moving on...

Science may play a part of coming up with weapons, but it is not involved in the decision to use them.

Also, science is not selling anyone anything; that's corporations.

Who invented the nuclear bomb so that the Russions could have them to sell? Did China learn how to mass produce all those weapons without any help at all from Science?

Point.
