The training of the squirrels

I step out of the shower and there's the squirrel hanging upside down on the screen looking in ...

There's one squirrel that is real skittish about coming in. Today he comes in gets the peanut in his mouth and then comes back so he can look over the edge of the table to see if everything is in its place (according to Squirrel Better Homes and Garden). Egads! And then he reaches out to get his peanut and manages to nip me! Neither squirrel ate the grape either! I wonder if they like vegetables, like carrot?

Suddenly, it's not so cute anymore though I doubt the squirrels have been totally trained out of their instincts for survival in the wild.

They know where to get food. Animals are opportunistic so they'll take all the food you give them.

The "problem" may be that they'll still come back to get food. I've already started spraying a mix of ammonia and water that I'm told they don't like.

Then there was the one that got a peanut from me and when he heard the car door slam he ran to the edge of the roof to see if the guy coming in was going to give him anything.

Meanwhile out in the wild California squirrels heat up their tails for defense against snakes!

I taught one squirrel the word "No"--which when you think about seems virtually impossible--how many times does a squirrel hear the word "No"?

So, when he showed up hangin upside down and then sideways on the screen to my bathroom* I could simply tell him "No" a couple of times and he got the message.

* "I'm here, where's my peanut? And just look at you soaking wet and stark naked--you look like a naked mole rat! Go put some clothes on and feed me!"
