  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Now the squirrel I call "mommie" (older and bigger than the rest) gets down on the floor to get her peanuts and then stands up as I reach over the side of the chair.
---
2 days ago, early evening one of the squirrels has had his fill of peanuts and is sitting in the window "well" (below the sill and hanging over where the screen would come down) and he's watching two guys who are standing outside talking. For 15 minutes he does that! Then he starts to holler at them. Apparently, they were standing in the path he wanted to take to get home!

Yesterday, we had a break through!

Mommie stood up to get her peanut AND took her first step!

Unfortunately, it wasn't planned or intentional on my part! When I saw it I thought: Oh great, now I'm teaching them how to walk upright! Spray a little bit of steroids on their peanuts, teach 'em how to pump iron and they'll be mugging people on the sidewalks for peanuts.

Trustandobey,

We had ground squirrels that would tease our dogs--and I'm not too sure that the dogs weren't in on the play.

Friend djconklin,

The squirrels in our yard are not quite as tame as yours, but we are working on it. I buy bags of dried corn and cut the cobs into two inch sections. I have one who is just about to the stage of taking it from my hand. The others will come for their corn, but are still too shy to get closer than a couple of feet.

I just read our local news site that has reported that the squirrels here are starving. We had a late freeze, and there are no acorns or maple seeds. They are stripping the bark off of trees looking for a nutrient that they must have. link to story

I was sitting here at the computer with my legs tucked back under the chair when all of a sudden I felt these little footpads on the back of my leg! One of the squirrels had come in real quiet like and then down onto the floor with no noise and around the other table with no toenails clicking on the floor and came to me looking for his peanut!

Training squirrels and other animals is very neat. Dogs want to please their master, squirrels and cats don't. And because of the small size of the squirrels brain (as I look down by my elbow! He's sitting on the arm of the chair. There he goes under the monitor again!) you have to work within that constraint--nothing too fancy like expecting them to leap through a flaming hoop or doing back-flips.

The nicest thing about dealing with animals is that they don't have low self-esteem or are losing an argument so they don't lie to you or about you, no snide remarks , they don't play the innocent victim, no put-downs, nothing, just pure "being."

ROFL! The squirrel just came in and ignored the peanuts -- he's wandering around the desk top checking things out! Watched me take a drink of water from my glass. Now he's wandering around on the other desk top, oops, back onto this one--he found where the peanuts in the shell are and he wants one, "no," "no," PU the bowl and he climbs down onto the file drawer where they were. So, I give him a small one and he takes off.

WOW! This is totally amazing. You're making me miss my squirrels. We left our house spring '06. There were many squirrels there that I just adored to spend time with. There was a black one that we slowly gained the trust of only to find out that she was soon to have babies!

We named her Fritzy, and once they were old enough she started bringing them to our yard to feed. It was amazing to see, because she taught them to trust us. Cannot remember their names for the life of me, though..but we had some great pics at one point. I'd be sitting out on our second story deck reading with some peanuts and they'd come right up and eat beside me, watching. I loved it.

Eventually they stopped coming. We're worried someone got rid of them. :(

We did end up with a bunch of others, though, including some grey ones and 2 red ones. We named one of the red ones Skrat (after Ice Age) and he was the most freaked out thing you've ever seen. Rofl. The wind would blow and he'd do a backflip then be half up the tree. I'm not kidding, either! A literal backflip!

It took me ages but he finally let me get close to him. I got some pics which I'll add to this below.

OH! And it was amazing..the black ones used to come and rest on the top of our fence. They'd stretch right out on their tummies, legs dangling off the sides, and just lay like that and watch us! LOL. I'll have to track down the pic of that.

Seriously, though..you are amazingly lucky. I'd give almost anything to have squirrels around me like that. I'm 17 stories up now, so that's not easily done.

These are of Skrat:

These are of McNutt, which is a squirrel that's outside of our apartment building:

Great pics--I wish I had some!

Tried to get a white squirrel to come close so we could (I had hoped) takes pics of it.
---
At the house we built we had ground squirrels that would come over and steal the dog food.

They also built tunnels under the stone pile (ab't 40 feet long) and so they'd pop up at one end chatter at the dogs, done into the tunnel, run to the other end, pop up and chatter at the dogs again! Over and over.

The squirrel just came in and ignored the peanuts

What he is doing is ignoring the one's I've taken out of the shell! He doesn't want to sit on the arm of the chair and eat like he was. Grab and leave!

I was laying down taking a nap when he came in--I'm all packed to move so everything is in the living room right now--and for some reason that little stinker has taken to getting down on the floor. So, I called him over and he climbed up onto my bed and onto my leg--jumped a bit when I talked to him tho'. So, he got down and I wnet and got him a peanut. I wish he was taller so I wouldn't have to bend over so low.
