  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Lately I'm realizing after getting very very sick and on antibiotics I need to do some trade-offs. For RESt, and getting things accomplished, I need to back off on excercise and other things like the internet.

Taking at least a 2mth break from internet from home will be hard, but will allow me to focus on some long neglected projects with an end goal of October.

Also part of that will be a break from CF. I will try to remember you all in prayer. You can leave this thread open to talk about your TRADE-OFFs.

Trade off , my definition, means trading one activity (time) for another.
Example(s)
My "trade- in" the other day was 10min walk instead of 1hr for going to the unemployment office and working on tailoring my resume for state jobs. And going to bed earlier.
Another week I did tradeoffs of exercise for sleep/rest, preparing food (using beans and rice) and preparing for a camping trip.

Well we will miss you, but we undestand. My prayer is for you to be well! :prayer:

Trade offs hmmmmmm

With my kids, especially the 14 year old it is to keep silent instead of arguing with him. You know how at that age they can be so negative and anything that doesn't go perfectly they get mad?

This morning I was taking him to school for the first time this year. It's been a year since I took him to school and I'm running on about 4 hours of sleep and I forgot (oh no!!!) where I was dropping him off. So I ask him, and he says "same place as last year" (yeah that really helped) and then gets mad because I don't remember! So I have to bite my tongue cuz it's just not worth stooping to his negative level. :D

Just wanted to give a followup on the tradeoff of internet and such. I ended up getting sicker by labor day weekend as I had pushed myself through too many things & had to cancel everything. My white blood cell count dropped from 3.6 to 2.7 in a week. And after a mth rose back to 3.9. Still not normal range but praise God.

Fellowship has still been good. I'm learning everyday, relationships are not always easy. And currently at a crossroads concerning if its the Lords will for me to remain single. And a friendship with a guy in my bible study.

The other result of the trade off, lots of files got sorted. Still more to do, but snowplowing will be coming soon. Would love to hear the results of your tradeoffs:)

Hi Sampa:wave:

I know what you mean! I have to make several trade offs; and i'm often not good at making good decisions with that. I want to do a lot of things and have a lot of interests, but too much indecision. I end up not doing much or prioritizing very well. Like you, i have certain projects i need to get done and should be done by the end of this month, but most are not even started (i.e. art work pieces). It's much easier to just sit in front of a computer when I get overwhelmed with everything else, which is all the time:o

I hope you get feeling better again soon! I hope this rest leaves you feeling rejuvenated like never before! Take care and know you're in my prayers and thoughts!

Javan

Javan, thanks. And thanks for sharing, yes as to why I have to schedule myself how I use the internet.

Blackribbon, I can understand. Everyone has their trade offs and sleep is sometimes very much needed. As a society we neglect regular sleep too much and don't realize that by the seasons we sometimes need more. This has also been my tradeoff fmuch of the past couple of years. Last year making sure I was in bed between 6-7pm and this year just making sure I'm home by 5pm so as to get myself dinner and ready for bed along with maybe some exercise.

I tend to trade watching TV when I get off from my second job instead of going right to sleep and then I end up only getting about 4 hours of sleep. Of course it catches up with me real fast and I'm trying to learn to just turn the TV off. I have been doing that lately and I am getting a little more sleep. I just can't come home and go right to bed after running around at work (literally) for 4 hours. I have to have a wind down time and a snack ;).

A hard thing to do Michelle. I've read that all media should be turned off an hr or two before bed. Lights dim down, I've noticed a big difference when I do this.
In snow plowing season the nights I'm plowing (12-16hrs) I won't turn on the internet or anything, its just food and bed. I might allow myself to read on the nights I'm wound up, usually at my desk. I don't know how you hold two jobs, thats more than I can do.

Awesome Renewed! Tell us how it goes:) Believe it or not, I know more about the elections without owning a tv than those that do. Conversations, little stuff on the radio and a few simple searches on the internet help me discern.

Soon I will be on a regimined internet schedule again since I have internet at home, meaning not as much time as I'd like here on CF but gotta continue focusing on other things and health.

I hear you, Michelle. I work nights and get home around 1 a.m. It takes me a while to unwind, too. I can't come home and go straight to bed...but the T.V. and computer do cut into my sleep time.

I tend to trade watching TV when I get off from my second job instead of going right to sleep and then I end up only getting about 4 hours of sleep. When you are tired, it often takes mindless tv to help the brain shut down. My brain often won't shut down when the lights go out. Reading just gives it something new to think about...but more often than not, there is no concentration level left to piece whole sentences together. I get it, Michelle.

What about listening to the radio instead of watching T.V.? The reason I say that is of course with T.V. you have all that visual stimulation and that makes it hard to relax, at least that is how T.V. affects me. But if I listen to the radio - either something broadcast on traditional radio or something streaming online, it helps me unwind. I used to stream a lot of audio through my smart phone. I recently got a Web radio (Logitech Squeezebox) and it operates much like a traditional radio only you can stream programming from around the world. You don't have to bother with a computer's clunky interface to stream audio off the Internet. And T.V. tends to have a lot of ads that shout at you, while depending on what you are listening to on the radio you might not have to put up with noisy ads.

Funny, I'm kind of the opposite. Songs touch me and I tend to actively listen to them whereas, the tv can serve as background noise for me cause there is nothing on worth my attention. LOL.

Also tv makes me feel not so alone...and music seems to accentuate how alone I really am.

I am used to sleeping with the TV on. Have been for years. When it's time for me to actually go to sleep, I usually put it on ID channel which is like 48 hours or some show about killers or murderers and catching them because I don't need to actually watch.

Trade offs are great if done right. I traded gaming for focusing on God and my fiance and it was worth it. If anything it made me wonder why I did not do it earlier. I've also traded drinking pop/soda for drinking water and tea. I even traded Taco Bell for Chipotles which is 10000x better for me and now I also feel better. I've had to do alot of trade-offing being disabled.

On a side not be careful with antibiotics. The more we take them, the more our bodies grow an immunity to them which makes it harder to heal.

Actually, the problem is when we don't take the whole antibiotic prescription because then we risk stopping before the bacteria is really completely killed. If there are any bacteria that survive because we stop early, then they have the opportunity to "learn" how to be immune to that antibiotic. (Very similar to giving them a vaccine to a particular antibiotic). And when that bacteria finds a place to grow again, it won't be as affected by the antibiotic. So our bodies don't grow an immunity, but rather the bacteria do...and then the current treatments no longer work...for us or anyone else who might come in contact with that bacterial illness.
