The Sims PC Game

Recently my daughter (13) bought the Sims PC game. Thought it was great until she created a relationship between two guys. My 4 year old came running to tell me these guys had kissed.

In the New South Africa we are very liberal nowadays and it is important to teach our children Biblical values, which we do.

Investigating further I noticed that one can choose profiles according to star signs and every now and then an information message pops up with a message from the Phsychic Advisor.

Any views on the Sims?

Well, I am a huge fan of free sexuality, but since you're a parent, I suppose I should tell you that there's an expansion you'll probly want to avoid. It adds a lot of sexy elements to the game, vibrating beds, condom vending machines and the like.

The game is not an especially realistic model of reality, nor does it pretend to be... But if things like this offend you, don't give your kids this game.

Perhaps it's good that she saw those two guys kissing in the game, so that she won't get so creeped out when she sees this in real life.

The psychic advisor, you mean on the phone, right? I think the fact that its an annoyance call and the sims dont like it should give a hint that they are not trying to push astrology as being true. The astrological signs arent meant to neccisarily push astrology, they are just pre-made character templates. Since the astrological signs attempt to catagorize personalities in the first place, they were added to the game just to have a graphic illustration where there wouldnt initially be one.

As for the men kissing, the cool thing about the sims is that you can prettymuch do anything. Last time I checked though, kissing was as far as you can go, theres no playing in the bed for them. Most everything that happens in the sims is user instructed, except for the few times where you let the sims inefficiently run their own lives. None of this stuff is at all prevelant to The Sims theme, so I wouldnt really worry. It really is quite an excellent game in my opinion, I love starting out as a low level paper pusher in a small house, and climbing the job ranks in order to get cash for a large mansion In the end I wouldnt worry, this is about as bad as the sims gets in terms of what your talking about.

Personally I dont like it, you can have sex before marriage, you can have homosexuals in it, heck you can even starve people to death and have people urinate on the floor, Im not a big fan of that game lol(Theres even a cheat to watch people nude without the censored blurryness). This is because it tries to be "realistic" and I dont want kids (yes even Im a kid) to get the perseption that this is ok in real life.

I understand the concern, but all kids do this stuff, with or without a PC. Kids make gay Barbie relationships, etc.

The Sims doesn't really facilitate anything that wouldn't otherwise happen.

Crispie: I don't believe you can have sex. As armed said, kissing is as far as it goes. Besides I think it would be hard to have sex as I believe they are about as anatomically correct as a Ken doll.

I'm not sure about anyone else, but sometimes I set up same sex relationships (like with roommates) for no other reason than to make them move quicker. They are insanely slow and so sometimes the only way you can get them out of bed, have breakfast and go to work is to make them a couple so that they can share the bathroom and a single bedroom.

Only a couple more months 'til The Sims 2 comes out! Woohoo, that's reason enough to buy an new machine right there!

As for situations such as passionate kissing and non-sexual nudity (censored though), that's life. The Sims is a game about life. People will kiss; people will take off their clothes in order to bathe. It happens.

And as any (somewhat) realistic game goes, risque behavior is not the highlight of the game. That is, of course, unless of course you have one of those characters who just loves to jump into the middle of fun...first time I played this game, I had one of those characters, and believe me, he WAS a character....
