The Shema

Our good friends over in the Messianic Jew forum have a thread going on the Shema. I asked them to write it out phonetically for us saved-gentiles here in the Bap/Anabap forum. Now you might think this is pointless, but for those of us who are into languages... I think it's pretty cool. Greek is great and I've enjoyed learning it but to me there seems to be something extra special about Hebrew, and Hebrew used to glorify God is especially special (IMO). So here it is.. The Shema:
She-ma Yis-ra-el A-do-nai Eh-lo-hey-nu, A-do-nai eh-chad.
Ba-ruch shame ki-vod mahl-chu-to li-o-lam va-ed.

Hear O Israel, the Lord is our God, the Lord is One. Praised
is the name of His glorious Kingdom for all eternity (the second
line is not in the Torah but is the accepted response to the dec-
laration of God’s Oneness).

Vi-ah-hav-ta et A-do-nai eh-lo-he-cha bi-chol li-vav-cha oov-
chal naf-shi-cha oov-chal mi-o-deh-cha. Vi-ha-yoo ha-da-va-
reem ha-ay-leh ah-sher ah-no-chee mi-tzav-cha ha-yom ahl li-
va-veh-cha. Vi-she-nan-tam li-va-neh-cha vi-dee-bar-ta bahm

And you shall love the Lord your God, with all your heart,
with all your soul, and with all your might. And have these
words, which I command you this day, be upon your heart. And
you shall teach them diligently to your children, and speak of
them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way,
when you retire, and when you arise. And you shall bind them
for a sign upon your hand and let them be frontlets between
your eyes. And you shall write them on the doorposts of your
house and upon your gates.

Vi-ah-hav-tah li-ray-eh-cha ka-mo-cha.

And you should love your neighbor as yourself

One thing to keep in mind, as far as pronunciation goes, is that the English "ch" does not exist in Hebrew. This is how the Hebrew letter ח (chet) is normally trasliterated, but the sound is gutteral, think making an "h" sound while trying to hock something up ( I know it's a gross description, but it's the best I can do ).

Echad is translated "one". It means "a composite unity".

Yachid is translated "one". It means "an absolute singularity".

The word echad is used to describe God in the Shema.
