A member asked me in a post what and how God shows His severity can you please explain for the benefit of us all?

[VERSE=Romans 11:22,KJV_APOCRYPHA]Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off.[/VERSE]

I think God's severity can be shown in how he does not like sin and does not like evil. He is very severe against evil

It depends on what exactly you are asking.

Much of the "severity" of God as understood by many denominations is of rather late innovation.

God is love, God desires all men to be saved, God wants to heal and restore us from the effects of sin, God will do all He can toward this goal, though He will not subject our wills if we actively reject Him.

However ... we do run the risk of being misunderstood by saying only this. There IS a certain severity of God - towards sin. And for any who might truly choose sin and involve themselves so deeply that they BECOME something connected to it rather than God ... well ...

And I suspect that at the end, God is going to be brutally honest with us each one, letting us see certain truths, so that even if we are "saved" I think we might have some very great regrets. But God will also wipe those tears away.

If you are looking for heaven/hell, the Orthodox have a rather different understanding than the Dante-esque one put forth by many others.

Consider therefore the kindness and sternness of God: sternness to those who fell, but kindness to you, provided that you continue in his kindness. Otherwise, you also will be cut off. NIV

Notice how God is both kind and severe. He is severe toward those who disobeyed, but kind to you if you continue to trust in his kindness. But if you stop trusting, you also will be cut off. NLT

Does this help?

We have a Holy God. Holiness and sin don't go hand in hand. Because He is righteous, and just He can not overlook evil and sin. That's why there had to be a payment/penalty for our sin to atone us to Him.

I am not sure that I understand exactly what the question is? :/

I hope so :)

I don't know if known factual specifics and cases were needed as evidence or just the acknowledgement that just because God is love doesn't mean He'll let things slide.

Well rhat is why He sent Jesus. Praise God! Thank Him.

Lets Obey Him too... as far as we are able. For He is Just, Holy and Unchanging and Worthy ofall Honour and all Praise. He saved us while we were still sinners. So let us have Faith in His all surpassing knowledge, wisdom and Sovereign Supremacy and be Thankful and glad.

His Ways are so much better than our ways. His ways lead right, ours only unto darkness.

The Puritan's had a real sense of God fearing and piety that I haven't been exposed to and am almost envious about.
I often thought that, nowadays I would like to have been in the early Church and have met an Apostle. A simpler life, even if I was at risk of persecution we wouldn't have all these doctrines which people on here like to discuss.

Wouldn't have had the NT either though. But we would have worked hard, prayed hard and lived in truth, with a Church community.

Think I'd rather this one out of Revelation

PHILADELPHIA — THE FAITHFUL CHURCH (REVELATION 3:7-13)
Christ commended the church in Philadelphia for four things: they have an open door, they have a little strength, the have kept the Word of God, and they have not denied the Lord. If we want to be commended by Christ like this church, we will go through open doors of ministry, depend on His strength, and be true to Him and to His Word

Copy and pasted from an article I googled. :)

The message Christ said to them made me cry at His goodness. His criticisms of the others made me cry (Feb/March) at how Just He is and how loving He could be in His warnings.

Was crying to my teen saying 'Look how wonderful Jesus is, how beautiful and perfect His words are.' Will never forget that moment.

Are you kidding???
To be cut off from God and light and everything that is good and loving to have no hope or relief from torment??
What are you saying and thinking take it back take it back God have mercy on you you don't know what you're saying.
you mean if I doubt something in the Bible, God will just cut me off?

that does sound severe. I don't see anything wrong with honest doubt.
Ask God to remove those doubts. Or better still take that step out in faith and obedience and your faith will grow.

Doubts can come from the enemy too. I would recommend keeping a journal of yr prayers, scripture, sermons etc. Don't need to keep it everyday but every few days. When youbre-read it you can see God's hand in your life and answered prayers (I assume you pray for things that must be in line with His will). How He prepares you for the next event through the way He guides yr reading and what you hear. Then it is impossible to even have doubts stay.

I forget most of my prayers. But I am always surprised when I see just how many get answered.
