  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Yep . They missed the forest for the trees - the tradition that the bible-thumpers of today have continued . We have Jesus before us and so many tell Him to stop distracting them from their deep studies of the Scriptures . The Gospel isn't that complex . After much study , I have found that I have been completely duped in this regard . What a waste of time . It could have been worse ... He could have waited longer before opening my eyes . I appreciate Him for the shortened period .

The condemnation was not on them because of their diligent search through scriptures. The condemnation came right after you stopped quoting and that being they did not believe the scriptures they searched.

They were not scolded for searching the scriptures, only not having faith in what they said.

I just read an interview with a pastor who claima he is just following the spirit, living by grace, and God spoke to him and told him that homosexuality is not a sin. Does this experience trump scripture? It sure sounds like a lot what I hear around here about what we must be following, a spirit, a leading, an experience.

Emphatically nope!

Do you have a link for this? I know we can't discuss homosexuality in this section of the forum, so I don't want to take the conversation there. But it is something being addressed on another forum, and I'm curious. PM me if you prefer. :)

But on this topic, I'm certain there are multiple examples that everybody could bring to the table, and "prove" that there is error possible in taking the opposing argument to the extreme.

They were not scolded for searching the scriptures, only not having faith in what they said.

The passage in question: John 5 (NASB)

39"You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that testify about Me;

40and you are unwilling to come to Me so that you may have life.

41"I do not receive glory from men;

42but I know you, that you do not have the love of God in yourselves.

43"I have come in My Father's name, and you do not receive Me; if another comes in his own name, you will receive him.

44"How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and you do not seek the glory that is from the one and only God?

45"Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father; the one who accuses you is Moses, in whom you have set your hope.

46"For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me, for he wrote about Me.

47"But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?"

It's hard to miss the point of this passage. These people were searching the scriptures, but apparently reading the wrong parts. Not that Jesus was mentioned much in the OT! But there is a True and Living God, and when He is present with His people we need to take note of Him.

Do you disagree that the Pharisees were quoting scriptures to teach people not to listen to Jesus? And can you see the parallels between that, and people today telling us not to listen to the Holy Spirit?
