  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Looks like there are brave Democrats who know it is time to open the government - here are their names.

Washington — Seven Democratic senators and one independent who caucuses with Democrats voted late Sunday to reopen the government and end the shutdown.
Three of them have consistently voted for Republicans' short-term funding patch — which passed the House in mid-September — to keep the government funded until Nov. 21 at current levels. The measure narrowly advanced in the Senate after it secured the support of five more Democrats with the expectation that it will be amended to extend funding until Jan. 30.
They were the brave ones. May they be protected from the wrath of the extremists (which seem to be about all but those 8) in the rest of the Senate who just gave us the longest federal shutdown in our 250 year history.

Um, why are the democrats in the Senate trying to stop poor people AND all the federal employees from getting anything? Think about that before answering.
You misplaced an effect for a cause. The intention, the purpose, the cause was to force Republicans to address healthcare. But Republicans were too obstinate and the shutdown happened. It was Republicans who used it to get what they wanted. And they did.

Obamacare - exclusively Democrats
Oversight of the ACA (because Obama didn't want his name on a failing venture) - Democrats
Addition of Subsidies to help with rising cost of healthcare - Democrats
Dates for the subsidies to end - Democrats
Who didn't address the need all of 2024 - Democrats
Who designed the subsidies to go directly to big pharma? - Democrats
Who designed the subsidies to not lower anyone's deductible, out of pocket or subscription cost - Democrats

Whose fault is all this?

Are you saying it's ok to withhold ALL funding for federal workers and SNAP recipients and hold them hostage for Obamacare subsidies? That not very good prioritizing!

Maybe in the mid-terms coming up, they can sell the idea of withholding food in favor of government subsidies for a healthcare plan that has failed. Maybe the SNAP recipients will have forgotten how hungry they were by then and will vote for the same people to represent them in the Senate.

Whose fault is all this?

Obamacare was the name coined by the GOP and meant to be a slur to discourage people from supporting the ACA. It worked. Many Republicans have a knee-jerk opposition to the word and anything Obama related.

That's why there were dozens of videos with people being mocked for saying they supported the ACA but wanted to get rid of Obamacare. That's why people were shocked and dismayed to learn they were asking to end their own healthcare plan because the branding was so successful. Much like the Department of War, it's just a nick/secondary name and not the legal name.

Some states also have their own exchanges instead of using the federal marketplace so may not even be referred to as the ACA or go through healthcare.gov to sign up.

Obama and Democrats initially avoided the term, preferring "Affordable Care Act," but by 2012, Obama embraced it to neutralize the criticism, saying, "You want to call it Obamacare? That's okay, because I do care.

You said he didn't want his name on a failing venture which is why it was called the ACA. That is false.

brave I suppose
None will be on the ballot in 2026. They have a long time to mend bridges.

The policy should be called Romneycare to give the credit or fault where it belongs.

The Democrats can now negotiate the subsidies with Republicans and put a bill before the Senate for a vote. If subsidies are as popular and essential as Democrats think, there should be no problem getting a dozen Republicans to vote for continuation of the level of subsidies.

If Democrats are wrong, they can close the government down again in January if they wish and make the election a referendum on subsidies. Does anyone believe that this strategy will work in January?

NOTE
The BBB passed in July made sure that federal entitlement checks would still go out. Federal employees who didn't get paid would be guaranteed their checks after the shutdown was over. Republicans mistakenly didn't include SNAP (food stamps). This has been corrected in the current bill. Republicans are ready for the next shutdown, especially after allowing a Senate vote on subsidies.

I would note that problem at the airport has ZERO to do with employees not being able to pay for gas or childcare. Folks who make $150K a year (before overtime) can work out how to borrow enough to cover a couple of paychecks. One problem was that not enough airport employees were declared "essential". Another is that we simply don't have enough air traffic controllers. We need many more. There were few delays. The airlines simply canceled flights and asked folks to check on flights before driving to the airports. There will be lost of delays when there is bad weather, without a shutdown.

...and looking forward to the Republican plan to replace the ACA....it's only been 10 years....
Republicans don't have a federal replacement and don't want to have one. The danger is that Obamacare gets voted down as part of BBB 2026, leaving folks to depend on state and other group programs.

Our president is on TV reminding everyone of what a bad leader he is.
President Donald Trump is a far better leader than anyone in the Democratic Party.

Johnson is talking about having a vote in January for the ACA. If this isn't resolved before Jan 15, and they actually extend the subsidies, they would need to extend or reopen the enrollment period as many people are not going to enroll with prices as they currently are. I don't trust the GOP to facilitate helping people keep healthcare but we'll see. At least when people cant afford care they will know who was fighting for and against them. I'm not convinced they will learn the lesson about who they should be electing, but again, we'll see.

No - it is just as accurate an opinion as yours is..
Johnson apologized by blaming Democrats. Real character.
Speaking truth to power is seldom comfortable - they held their constituents hostage - openly saying they were using their suffering for leverage - millions of people effected and in the end got ZERO - nothing.

That's a fail in my book

I didn't give my opinion. I stated a fact.
