  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Let's hope they don't forget that Republicans want their health insurance to go way up.
The current reality is their SNAP expires tomorrow thanks to the Democrat shutdown.

SNAP has a contingency reserve available that the Trump administration refuses to release. There were also two proposals that would keep SNAP funded during the shutdown, one by the Democrats (Keep SNAP and WIC Funded Act) and another by Republican Senator Josh Hawley, which was co-sponsored by 11 other Republicans (Keep SNAP Funded Act). Senate Majority Leader John Thune blocked a vote on both this week. That's what the people who will have to go without SNAP benefits will remember.
If people are not getting SNAP it's because of the Democrat shutdown.

But the people don't have to go without SNAP during the shutdown. Why doesn't the Senate majority leader hold a vote on proposals that would allow them to continue? Why doesn't the Trump administration use the SNAP contingency funds?

It's a matter of the Democrats ending the shutdown they put in place.

SNAP benefits have always continued during a shutdown in the past; the USDA had a plan in place as recently as four weeks ago to keep SNAP benefits going during a government shutdown by using contingency funds, and both parties have introduced plans to prevent SNAP benefits from ending tomorrow. It doesn't matter which party is responsible for the shutdown; there are ways to keep SNAP from going unfunded. If SNAP benefits are not distributed in November, it's the Republican leadership that's to blame for that.

SNAP Benefits for 42 Million People Could Still Be Saved During the Shutdown

Oh look.

There's a work around...several actually.

I wonder when the party with all the power would make SURE they would do everything they can to support poor Americans.
No they won't.

I've seen the awful things on social media....people like matt walsh arguing that the poor people buying groceries "drive up the price of groceries" and now that there is no snap funding, prices will drop because demand will go down.

I mean, it's not only awful, it's braindead stupid and it's fueled by anger. There's people absolutely LOVING that poor people aren't getting fed and you'd NEVER guess which side of the political things these people sit on.

Shutdown 2025:
“The crucial point here is that the Trump administration is choosing to violate the law and choosing not to spend money it has available to it to pay for food for poor people,“ said Samuel Bagenstos, former general counsel to the Office of Management and Budget, referring to requirements laid out in the Food and Nutrition Act.
The former general counsel of the Office of Management and Budget says the Trump administration isn’t “just wrong” to claim that using the money would violate the law. “It’s very likely that they’re violating the law by not using this money that’s sitting there,” he said.
Bagenstos said the Trump administration isn’t “just wrong” to claim that using the money would violate the law. “It’s very likely that they’re violating the law by not using this money that’s sitting there,” he said."

Trump could with the snap of his finger or a musing on Truth Social make sure SNAP benefits are released. Just like it happened during the 34 day shutdown over border wall money that Trump said Mexico would pay for.

If they 'have all the power' why are they not opening the government?

Senate Republicans Block Democratic Effort to Fund SNAP During the Shutdown
Oh! The Republicans actually worked to STOP people from getting fed; like, ACTIVELY blocking efforts for poor people to get food.

Boy, I wonder what Turning Point USA would say about this effort to make the poor suffer. Probably nothing because they're not interested in helping poor people if it is done through taxes.

Because they are choosing not to negotiate a settlement with Democrats. ie....they are not WORKING toward a solution. They just want their way 100%.

Simple.

They do have the power and Trump is finally telling them to use it, as dems have suggested all along, by ending the filibuster.

Who started the shutdown or how it ends is irrelevant. Trump and the Republican leadership are making the choice to allow SNAP benefits to go unfunded, and they alone will be responsible if SNAP benefits are not available next month.

It's plenty relevant. The Democrats started it and it will end when they finally end it. As opposed to if this and if that. That's just shifting blame to avoid accountability.

No. They HAVE all the power because they can CHOOSE to negotiate to get it passed. When they choose NOT to negotiate, they are exerting their power too.

And when they BLOCK legislation to feed the poor, it kinda shows you their hand; If a person cares of course....

Denying the reality that REpublicans are STOPPING people from getting fed by deflecting to a seperate issue doesn't make Republican government officials innocent.

The issue is the Schumer shutdown. Anything else is the deflection.
