  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What are you referring to?
D your research - educate yourself - It is the Senate Democrats voting to keep the government closed to strong arm legislation that did not go their way when BOTH Houses passed the Big Beautiful Bill. The answer to the issue lies with the Senate, not the House.

You refer to some CR and don't bother to provide the CR# or a description?

And btw, your narrative is wrong. The House went into recess after throwing their CR to the Senate. No negotiation. No subsequent negotiations with the Senate. They just went home...and have been there for the past six weeks.

"Throwing the CR" - In other words voting and passing the CR is the extent of their responsibility - the CR is the EXACT same one that Schumer and Democratic Senate Leaders voted for and supported just seven months ago -

The power to open or close the Government lies with the Senate - not the House

  • 13 Failed Votes: The Senate attempted to pass a Republican-backed funding bill 13 times, each failing to reach the 60-vote threshold required to advance.
  • Shutdown Fairness Act: On October 23, the Senate voted on a bill to pay federal workers during the shutdown. It failed to pass.
  • No Democratic Support: Despite repeated efforts, no new Democratic senators voted in favor of advancing the funding bill.
  • Vice Presidential Involvement: Vice President J.D. Vance met with Senate Republicans but did not sway votes or offer a viable funding solution.

This is the undeniable evidence that Trump is not in charge of the entire government and hes not an authoritarian AND there still is a separation of powers.
Not Yet, but he's working on it.

The poor and needy are of no concern their political agenda is
Some added context.

"...in a divided government like this, well, not even divided with Republicans holding all the levers, we have to use every tool available to protect core programs like the ACA subsidies that millions rely on. Republicans control the House, the Senate, and the White House. Frankly, this is our only moment of leverage, and although a very unpleasant tool to use, it’s gotten us focused on what we have to do to change direction on health care. It’s one of the few times we can force a real conversation on these priorities before they're locked in for years. We've already seen some movement in the talks this week."

Oh? That's why the Republicans don't want to extent ACA subsidies? To help the poor and needy?
Nope - that's why the Democrats are using the same CR they supported just 7 months ago to negotiate their political agenda - to reverse what has already been voted on, passed by both houses and signed into law on July 4, 2025

They don't care who suffers as long as they get what they want.

The Democrats refused to provide the votes.
They have no obligation to just give the republicans what they want. It’s the party in charge that should be finding ways to work out a deal with the minority party they need onboard to pass their agenda. Their refusal to work with democrats shows this shutdown is just as much GOP strategy as it is Democratic.

That was the Democratic strategy. Its their fault the government shut down.
It’s Congress’ fault.

Of course. No Republican is to blame for the dysfunction of Congress even though both houses are currently run by republicans and we have a republican president who hails himself as a great deal maker who can get things done.

The only problem is the American people don’t believe this and are blaming the party in charge of our federal government and that’s what MTG is trying to get across but anyone daring to speak against the GOP narrative that this is solely and entirely the fault of the democrats must obviously be incorrect.
As long as the democrats in the Senate solely and entirely vote to keep the government shut down, they are solely and entirely responsible for it being shut down.

Nonsense. It’ll open back up as soon as the GOP show a willingness to work with the opposition. They refuse to so the government remains shutdown. That is entirely on the GOP-led dysfunctional Congress.

I was reading a poll today that stated 8% blame Trump (who does not even vote in the Senate), 9% blame the Republicans, and 83% blame the Democrats. Rightly so. A continuing resolution is not the time to add legislation and spending. Pass the CR and then negotiate the other things. Democrats shut down the government and are holding America Hostage. They seem to think they won the election.

Or maybe it'll open up when the "opposition" decides to stop being in opposition to the government being opened. Remember, the Republicans are voting to open it, but they need just 5 democrats to stop opposing it. Can Senate democrats find just 5 of their members who will stop opposing the reopening of the government? So far, no.

Right, because republicans always act in good faith and will of course negotiate after they get everything they want.

Provide? I'm sorry, but that's quite the funny thing to say. What did the Republicans do to get those votes? They aren't entitled to them without giving the Democrats something. It's on them to negotiate.
Rhe democrats already accepted the idea previously then changed their minds. The Demorats decided to demand more things then vote no. Thats on them. The chose to shut the government down.

True. That may happen. That is politics and the result of winning and losing elections. They are under no obligation to help the Democrats fulfil their agenda. Nor are the Democrats obligated to help the Republicans. That is the way Democracy works.

True. That may happen.
I'd say it most likely would happen. The GOP has shown no interest in negotiating in good faith up to this point, why trust they will when they get what they want up front?

And given who is in charge of the Republican party, trust is not something easily given to Republicans these days.

That is politics and the result of winning and losing elections. They are under no obligation to help the Democrats fulfil their agenda. Nor are the Democrats obligated to help the Republicans. That is the way Democracy works.
Which is why we're at a standstill. Of course, the GOP could end this by negotiating on health care subsidies in good faith, but we know that's not gonna happen. Instead, they'd rather blame the democrats than even try to compromise, which proves that the shutdown is pretty much the Democratic Party's only leverage at this point.

Which is why we're at a standstill. Of course, the GOP could end this by negotiating on health care subsidies in good faith, but we know that's not gonna happen.
And the dems could end this by convincing just 5 of their own people to cooperate with the majority and reopen the government. The Republicans, the federal workers, and the SNAP recipients all want that to happen. But if those 5 democrats keep being opposed to it, then yes, we'll continue being at a standstill.

Instead, they'd rather blame the democrats than even try to compromise, which proves that the shutdown is pretty much the Democratic Party's only leverage at this point.
Thanks for admitting that the democrats are putting the country through an extended shutdown in order to have "leverage". Air traffic controllers and other federal employees working without pay to be leveraged by the democrats. Poor people will soon be leveraged by the democrats as well by making them starve without their food benefits.
What ever happened to "We're all in this together" rather than "sacrifice the well-being of Americans as a way to hopefully stick it to Trump"?
