The living Word of God - Jesus - and the Scripture are two different things.

The Bible as we know it today didn't exist in Jesus time.

To discuss this properly it would be better to accept the convention that we use a Capital W 'Word of God' when referring to the Living Word Jesus, and a small word of God when referring to Scripture.

Can you agree on this otherwise your presentation is very confusing as you swap from one to another as if they are both the same.

Scripture please Carl. According to the scripture Jesus is indeed the living Word that has given us his spoken and written Words that we are to live by. The scriptures (word of God) are Gods' spoken and recorded written Words of God. Therefore if faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God *Romans 10:17 and we are saved by God's grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8-9) the only rule of genuine faith is scripture (Gods' Word) because without it we do not have faith and without faith we have no salvation *Romans 14:23; Hebrews 11:6.

Gods' people have always had God's Word, as the spoken and written words of God.

Exactly so the New Testament is just the latest edition of God's word. Scripture needs to be taught in context. That is why we also need The Church which was formed a hundred years before Matthew was written.

For me this is not a very hard question to answer from the scriptures.

WHAT DO WE MEAN BY SCRIPTURE OR WHAT IS SCRIPTURE?

2 Timothy 3:16-17 [16], ALL SCRIPTURE IS GIVEN BY INSPIRATION (God breathed) OF GOD, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: [17], That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished to all good works.

So scripture is God's words given to mankind that are profitable for for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness. God gives us scripture so that we may be perfected and thoroughly furnished to all good works.

Now that we know what scripture is (God's spoken and recorded written Words given to us for our salvation), lets continue...

WHY IS SCRIPTURE THE ONLY RULE OF FAITH?

Romans 10:17 So then FAITH COMES BY HEARING AND HEARING BY THE WORD OF GOD.

Scripture is the only rule of faith because it is through the scriptures that we receive faith. Our faith comes as we believe and follow what God's Word says (James 2:17-26).

Hebrews 11:6 [6], But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that comes to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Romans 14:23 Whatsoever is not of faith is sin..

Ephesians 2:8-9 [8], For by grace are you saved THROUGH FAITH; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:[9], Not of works, lest any man should boast.

So according to the scriptures we are saved by God's grace through faith that comes by the word of God as we believe and follow what Gods' Word says as our faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God.

GOD'S SPIRIT IS THE SPIRIT OF THE WORD OF GOD WHICH WE RECEIVE AS WE BELIEVE WHAT GOD'S WORD SAYS

John 6:63, It is the spirit that quickens; the flesh profits nothing: THE WORDS THAT I SPEAK UNTO YOU THEY ARE SPIRIT AND THEY ARE LIFE.

John 17:17, Sanctify them through your truth: your word is truth.

Matthew 4:4 Man does not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.

Acts of the Apostles 2:38 Then Peter said to them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Acts of the Apostles3:19 Repent you therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord.

Matthew 21:22 And all things, whatever you shall ask in prayer, BELIEVING, you shall receive.

John 3:36, HE THAT BELIEVES ON THE SON HAS EVERLASTING LIFE; HE THAT BELIEVES NOT THE SON SHALL NOT SEE LIFE, BUT THE WRATH OF GOD REMAINS ON HIM.

According to the scriptures we receive God's Spirit by believing and following what Gods' Word says. God's Spirit is the Spirit of the Word of God *John 6:63 and works through Gods' Word *John 17:17 as we believe and follow what God's Word says allowing God to work in and through us to will and to do of His own good pleasure Philippians 2:13. Faith (belief or believing) comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God we are saved by grace through faith that comes from Gods' Word. Therefore I believe that the scriptures are the only rule of faith. The truth of Gods' Word can only be found as we seek Jesus for it through his Word by claiming his promise for his Spirit to be our guide and teacher (see John 16:13; John 7:17; John 14:26; John 8:31-36; 1 John 2:27). This is God's new covenant promise to those who believe and follow Gods' Word *Hebrews 8:10-12.

Just curious why prayer is not a higher priority than scripture, assuming one reads the Bible on occasion. Wouldn't it be *prayer* that leads to deeper faith/understanding/ believing..?

It was a good response please read the OP. No one has ever said we can know Gods' Word without Gods' Spirit. That is an argument I have never said or made so why pretend I am saying things I have never said? According to the scripture God's Spirit is not separate from Gods' Word and we receive both through faith and faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God *John 6:63; Romans 10:17.

God's Word is scripture. Paul's faith came through the Word of God just like ours does. This is what Paul is talking about in Romans 10:17. Gods' spoken Word and the recorded written Words, have always been given to God's people to believe and follow and this is where our faith comes from. I agree scripture is in fact an accepted scripture from God but going as far as putting it as the Living Word is a reach only way we distinguish the two is ones eternal other was written. John says: “I saw heaven opened,and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True … He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God.” (Revelation 19:11-13). These scriptures clearly points that all faith and spirit comes from the WORD OF GOD JESUS!!!!
Through the ministry of the Holy Spirit, God has placed his word in our hearts and minds. Indeed, that is the promise of the New Testament. God says: “This is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, ‘Know the LORD,’ for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them.” (Jeremiah 31:33-34).
Thus, the word of God is delivered to us direct-ly by the Holy Spirit and not through a bible. Jesus says of the Holy Spirit: “He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but what-ever He hears He will speak.” (John 16:13). This means the Holy Spirit will never cont-radict the words of Jesus in the bible. Scripture is compiled from the WORD not the WORD!
