This is what I "got" from reading the two passages (6 and 15). The only other Nikolaos in the NT that I know of was a deacon (Acts 6:5), an Antiochian proselyte, who was to "wait tables" ie distribution to the widows, etc. These deacons were chosen by the people.

If interested, 2 Peter 2 (10-end of chapter) also uses the example of Balaam (Revelation 2:14-16, iirc) in association with - among other things - desires of the flesh (covetousness again).
One of the passages is most similar to Jude 1:8 (2 peter 2:10).
