I wonder if LLoJ is the thread resurrection ... ;)

Yes, he is. This time it is useful to me though.

I'm just not sure anyone else is interested in the topic. The OP continues to be of interest to me. It would be helpful if everyone who claims sola scriptura knew what it was intended to mean and how it was intended to be informed.

I suspect some may prefer their own method, but honestly - shouldn't it have another name, since it is no longer sola scriptura if it refuses to be informed regarding interpretation?

In my recent posts I've been making explicit use of the ancient canon of scripture; if one wishes to be sola scriptura then one ought to have a complete canon I reckon ;)

But I am not sure why anybody wants to be "bible only" (as opposed to sola scriptura as it was used in the 16th century). Bible only folk seem to be almost incoherent when it comes to explaining their theology. How on earth do they maintain their allegiance to the Blessed Trinity and a proper understanding of the incarnation? I've encountered posts in GT which appear to deny that the resurrected Christ is human ... and we've all seen many posts that deny that Mary is the mother of God (the Son incarnate in Jesus Christ). So perhaps the kind of sola scriptura we encounter in GT varies so much that we need several words to properly describe what each of the varieties is. Maybe we could use these terms:
  • bible alone (BA)
  • bible and doctrine (BD)
  • bible and church (BC)
  • bible and doctrine and church (BDC)
I imagine there are other varieties out there.

It is probably true that Martin Luther held to something similar to BDC and it is possible that John Calvin was close to BD but still in the BDC camp. But in GT a lot of posts are BA.

Catholics are none of the above, I guess we might fit a description like
Bible and Apostolic Tradition and Spirit speaking in the church (BTS).
