Although you may be stating a fact, what you are stating coming from you as a smoker telling others not to smoke impacts credibility IMO.

That may be the case - but it´s unreasonable. The facts aren´t dependent on anyone´s credibility.
Do you think I should lie or be silent about the negative effects and risks of smoking?

If I was 30 pounds overweight and got a checkup from my doctor and he told me I needed to lose weight for my health, but he himself is 100 pounds overweight, that message will not have the credibility it would coming from a doctor who is not overweight, even though he is technically correct.

So? "This guy isn´t credible" still doesn´t make a case for being overweight.

The topic isn´t what makes you or anyone credible, the question is, if "But you do it, too" is a valid argument in a discussion, and it´s not. It´s known as the "Tu quoque" fallacy.

On another note, having first hand experience can add to your credibility: As a smoker, I know what I am talking about.

How can you make sure they make an educated decision and not smoke for their health, when you have not made an educated decision yourself and say you smoke because you want to?

Yes, I have made an educated decision. "Educated decision" doesn´t mean "correct decision". It means you know the facts.

That would be like me telling my kids not to smoke, if all they did was see me smoke everyday.

I´m not telling anyone not to smoke, I am saying "Smoking comes with health risks and costs a lot of money." These facts are not depending on my credibility. They are demonstrable and supportable by evidence.
