As a new covenant Christian we are not under the Law, but rather, we are under grace. This does not mean that the Law is done away with but it does mean that the Law's authority to require punishment for law breakers has been disarmed. This was very hard to grasp for a religious Jew in Jesus' day.
Jesus had a very hard task of trying to balance the letter of the Law with the spirit of the Law. The letter of the Law demands punishment for sin but the spirit of the Law teaches us how to love God and man.
The greatest challenge Jesus had was when it came to the Sabbath because within Sabbath keeping there needs to be a blend of loving God and loving man. Jesus taught us how to maintain this balance.
Never once, in the words or life of Jesus, did He ever have an issue as to which day the Sabbath was. Never once did Jesus ever speak of the first day. Never once did Jesus say the Sabbath was no longer a special time.
What He did teach is that He is Lord of the THE Sabbath. He did teach that doing good on THE Sabbath did not offend God. He did teach that caring for human and animal needs on THE Sabbath did not offend God. Jesus did a lot of teaching regarding Sabbath observence under the new covenant.
Let us not use the grace of God as a license to sin, but rather, let us follow the teachings of Jesus by observing the Sabbath without overlooking the needs of others and let us remember the day God blessed and called holy, even before sin was in the world. In doing this, we will be true followers of Christ.
