  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I agree and yet disagree at the same time. I don't like being defined by what I don't believe in or what I oppose. I like being defined by what I DO believe in. So I think much of the attention that fundamentalists lash on homosexuality, for example, is misspent energy.

I agree with the pope that it is time to end the obsession with homosexuality and contraception. However, I think we should continue to publicly oppose abortion. As liberal as I am, I still can't stomach it.

Would u agree that abortion should at least be legal when the baby will not survive the health of the mother and rape?

Yes... in some cases abortion is merciful and should be legal. E.g. ectopic pregnancies, and soon-to-be-fatal diagnosis for the mother and/or the child.

I am not so sure when it comes to rape - the fact that the mother was abused doesn't automatically infer a right to end the life of the child produced.

He's right, Catholics are obsessed with those issues and so are fundamentalists. He makes a great point: cool it.

However he isn't saying anything fundamentally different than what any other Pope has already said. The difference is he communicates much better to people than most Catholics AND Fundamentalists who scream about the hot-button issues.

I used to be much more "pro-choice" than I am now, when I was an agnostic... Now, I can't regard it as just a choice without consequences. I'm not sure where I stand on the issue politically.

The church I currently attend (because its really close to where I live, a mostly hispanic, working class neighborhood) is a liberal, Independent Catholic church and they welcome gays, regard contraception as a private matter, but they are pro-life, they just are less political about it. Mostly the church is made of people that feel like previous popes never really implemented Vatican II fully, so they left Rome.

If pregnancy were simpler I'd agree. But it's hard work, and not risk-free. If a mother hasn't come to accept the child as a gift that's independent of how it happened, it could feel like a continuing assault. I don't think I'd want to put someone through that.

The pope seems to be more common sense in being the church in 21 century.

I don't think it's just Catholics but much of Christianity as a whole. The Christian faith is starting to become a little too one-dimensional to me because everything seems geared towards the above two or three subjects.

Granted, Protestants tend not to focus on birth control as much, but gay marriage and abortion seem to be prevalent across the board. Evangelicals and other right-leaning Protestant groups nearly build their entire church around those issues. At some point, you just have to shake your head and say "I don't think this is what Christ had in mind."

That being said, Pope Francis is a compelling leader. I think perhaps as a Jesuit he has his finger on the pulse of what really matters not just in matters of faith, but in matters of people.

Would u agree that abortion should at least be legal when the baby will not survive the health of the mother and rape?

I know I'm not the one this post is addressed to, but I would say that I would agree with those circumstances. I personally think using abortion as birth control just allows people to shirk common sense and responsibility, but in cases of rape or when the fetus is endangering the mother's life, I would absolutely agree with it.
