The Philistines (Hebrew פלשתים, plishtim) were a people who inhabited the southern coast of Canaan, their territory being named Philistia in later contexts. Their origin has been debated among scholars. The Philistine language has been identified as a Semitic language but modern archeology has also suggested early cultural links with the Mycenaean world in mainland Greece. Though the Philistines adopted local Canaanite culture and language before leaving any written texts, an Indo-European origin has been suggested for a handful of known Philistine words...

Thanks for posting these video series Shpinx. They've really helped bring topics of interest to this forum.
I've heard it said that "Palestine" is a corruption of Philistine. Had heard of the Greek tie, even as a suspected origin
I think the Greek connection would explain for some of the massive armies the Philistines fielded. Maybe they were getting reinforcements from Cyprus or other parts of the Hellenic world.

Very interesting and civilized culture. Despite the modern use of their name for ''uncultured'', the Philistines show signs of a love for the arts.

Also, the reason they beat the Hebrews many times was not due to a massive army - they infact were a far smaller nation than Judah with a smaller army also -was because they had a monoply on iron smithing and the Hebrews primarily used inferior bronze arms and armour.

The Greek origin does seem almost certain but evidence does also suggest a Lydian influence also.
