First, let me say that my wife and I are huge Broadway fans. Mainly the more contemporary stuff, like Phantom, Les Mis, Miss Siagon and such... We have seen the show twice. Once in Toronto, and Cleveland.

But please let me ask this...

Why is everyone so obsessed with Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman?

Like everyone else I was on the MC and SB bandwagon. Then I finally got a chance to see it in Toronto in 1994. My wife (girlfriend at the time)and I were so excited. Then it started. Absolutely awesome. Then came the Phantom who was being played by Colm Wilkinson (You should know that name if you know anything about broadway). We didn't know who Colm was from a hole in the wall, but let me tell you what. He made Michael Crawford sound like a little boy from the Vienna Boys Choir. My wife and I were in awe of his power, strength, feeling and stage presence.

After the show we bought the Canadian Cast Recording and his albumn Stage Hero's. Awesome as well...

I then took it upon myself to find out a little more about Colm. Little did we know was the fact that Colm originated the role of Jean Valjean in Les Mis, performed the role of Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar and various other roles and singing engagements throughout the UK.

Also, many people don't realize this but Michael Crawford did not originate the role of the phantom. Colm Wilkinson did. Andrew Lloyd Webber, before he premiers a new show, puts on, or did put mini shows at his home. When he did this he had Colm perform the part of the Phantom. Why he chose or how he chose Crawford, I don't know. Maybe there was conflicting schedules with Les Mis at the time. This is just my opinion, but if it wasn't for POTO, Michael Crawford would not be where he is at today... I really can't stand to listen to him on anything other than Phantom, and when I do hear him, all I can say is that Colm is better....

And really Colm is not the only who out performs Crawford either IMO. If you guys can find some excerpts of Peter Carrie doing Phantom, he will blow your mind away... Absolutely phenomenal voice. In fact I would not be surprised if Carrie is a better Phantom then Colm. From what I have heard Carrie really impresses me...

People, if you can, buy a copy of the original canadian cast recording you will not be dissapointed.

PS. Rebecca Cain who appears on the Original Canadian Cast Recording, sings circles around Sarah Brightman.:p
