  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I've just seen The Passion Of The Christ on dvd, and I wanted to say finally. A movie that portrays Pilate as trying his hardest, without being killed, to have Christ released. How did you find the show?

I haven't seen the show . However , I would like to say that Pilate didn't try his hardest . He knew that he had an innocent man and had all the power to let him go . He had the power of the Roman army on his side to back it up .

Be careful of getting your historical facts from movies.
Some things are better left as "conjecture", when they go beyond the written Word.

I'm only goin' to see if the "movie freaks" (my wife & son) bring it home & insist on it, more to have me spend time with them than seeing it.

Just from all the discussion good & bad, it sounds pretty gratutitous in more than one way, to me.
I think I've become averse to cathode rays or something.

Ah I rated it. Not all my cuppa tea but cool.

It reminded me of Lord of the Rings in that it had an Ork-like sense of evil present throughout, which may have been the case, I guess!

I thought the portrayal of the Roman guard was outstanding, especially the drunk floggers.

Hmmm. I kind of see things differently. Pilate to me, seemed controled by the crowd. Luke 23 20 Wanting to release Jesus, Pilate appealed to them again. 21But they kept shouting, "Crucify him! Crucify him!"

See the following post for more on this.

Here's more in John 19, that I feel says that Pilate tried his hardest without being killed, to have Jesus released.

4Once more Pilate came out and said to the Jews, "Look, I am bringing him out to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him."

5When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe, Pilate said to them, "Here is the man!"

6As soon as the chief priests and their officials saw him, they shouted, "Crucify! Crucify!"
But Pilate answered, "You take him and crucify him. As for me, I find no basis for a charge against him."

7The Jews insisted, "We have a law, and according to that law he must die, because he claimed to be the Son of God."

8When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid,

9and he went back inside the palace. "Where do you come from?" he asked Jesus, but Jesus gave him no answer.

10"Do you refuse to speak to me?" Pilate said. "Don't you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?"

11Jesus answered, "You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin."

12From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jews kept shouting, "If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king opposes Caesar."

That last sentence in my opinion could have had Pilate condemned as a traitor, if he let Jesus go.

Pilate knowingly had an innocent man crucified . All he had to do was let him go . But , he decided to have Rome responsible and used Roman soldiers and Roman taxes to do it . If he let Jesus go , the Jews could kill him whenever they wanted . It isn't as if Jerusalem was free of such things ( especially when the city was full during the Passover ) .

From my experience , the interpretation that Pilate was innocent comes from the Catholic group's desire to lay the whole thing on the Jews .

I dissagree. If you were part of the roman machine, there is no way you would be able to show Rome to be weak when faced with the upsurge of the local undesirables. Rome is always about show of strength, Pilate did what he had to to avoid inciting further unauthorised public demonstrations that would logically become riots later on. Such understnading would have been implicitly in his nature, if he wa any good as a roman. He may have regretted later, though.

Exactly . One more death of a religious zealot would not be a big deal for someone whose job was to keep the people in line .

The scripture I've given says specifically that Pilate was afraid, and also tried to have Christ released. Pilate could have been executed, for freeing Christ. Anyone who claims to be king opposes Caesar. I'm not denominational, and have arrived at my opinion from scripture alone.
