My ¢¢, I think it is whatever each individual's contribution is. For the virgins it was the oil. Someone who is e.g. a teacher and pastor they must be prepared, their lesson and/or message ready at the proper time. Matthew 24:36-49.

If I remember right, John Chrysostom wrote that the unwise virgins were those who gave no alms to the poor. When it became too late they rushed out to make up for it but were unsuccessful. It's an example of what Christians should be doing all along. It's not much different than Matthew 24:

Mat 24:45 “Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his master made ruler over his household, to give them food in due season?

Mat 24:46 “Blessed is that servant whom his master, when he comes, will find so doing.

Salvation is a gift from God. One does not earn gifts.

The parable is about being prepared and ready.
The wise like the foolish fell asleep, untill warned the bridegroom was coming. hey all got ready, but only the wise had brought spare oil to ensure they could light the way of the bridegroom. The foolish had not thought to bring extra oil and as a result were shut out.

I see it as the second of a trilogy on genuine faith vs. counterfeit faith:

1) Matthew 24:35-51 - no belief, faithfulness (hypocrite) and watchfulness

2) Matthew 25:1-13 - no Holy Spirit; we have no oil of our own, we must go to the One that does, for the spirit of man is a lamp that is out until the Holy Spirit lights it

3) Matthew 25:14-30 - no fruit

Matthew 25:31-46 - genuine and counterfeit faith revealed at Judgment

Wise means living a holy life, try your best to stay away from sin. Always pray, always repent, always do good in God's providence.
Foolish means treating salvation lightly, continue living sinful life, ignoring God's grace, make Holy Spirit feel sorry, does not admit Jesus is Lord, follow the standard of the world.

So would wise not be knowing the difference between genuine faith and counterfeit faith?

The oil represents good works. The Bible speaks in favor of there are reasons why our salvation requires us to choose to do good works, such as in that parable and Romans 2:13 while it speaks against one of those reasons being for the purpose of earning it as a wage, such as in Romans 4:4-5.

There is an oil of Joy (Hebrews 1:9) and words of loving devotion (Psalms 141:5, 1 John 2:20). And its anointment (Luke 4:18) gives forth light (Psalms 119:130) in the lamp (Psalms 119:105). So the oil means the abidance of the words and spirit of God?
