  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I know its an unpopular opinion, but IMHO, the current incarnation of the Olympics, and all the hype surrounding it, is exactly the sort of idolatry we are warned against.

Nothing wrong with sport and healthy competition, don't get me wrong, and the ideal of a comming together of nations to foster peace is admirable, but all the hype, the undue reverence the whole thing is given, they way we are told over and over how important all this is... you know, its the Olympic GAMES.

Said my piece.

I have that problem more with the World Cup, NFL and what have you. The Olympics offer a chance for athletes of sports nobody cares about to take their place in the limelight. It offers a sense of balance that I can appreciate.

you bring up sports that nobody likes. I always wonder why they still keep them and it's not like they haven't removed some sports in the past.

Judging from the Nielsen ratings, evidently lots of people like them when it's the Olympics...

I love equestrian sports but outside of the Olympics it's hard to find a TV station willing to air them.

I didn't like the opening ceremony, all that reenactment of British history was boring and, in my opinion, poorly executed.

Really? I thought it was fun and extremely well-coordinated. It received brilliant reviews too. I liked them a lot. But then again I am a bit of an Anglophile.

that compiles everything and not each individual sport. swimming, basketball, track & field, wrestling, volleyball, those usually are the biggies.

I actually don't care for equestrian. horse is doing all the work. same with sailing, synchronized swimming.

For what its worth, I have the same issue with thoes sporting events as well, and you are right, it does give some of the lesser known sports and countries a chance to be seen, and that's good. I just think the negative out weighs the positive.

And? I do care about them. Nobody's being forced to watch it. I just think if offers a chance for people to see some of the lesser-known sports. And let's face it, when was the last time major networks spent any significant amount of airtime on volleyball, even? And it differs per country - over here equestrian sports and field hockey are big numbers. Wrestling, nobody gives a hoot here.

The opening ceremony was a wonderful mix of chaos and mayhem. Mixed with very emotional and personal insights of where the UK has come from and what made it the country it is today.

There was a clear left wing message in it that may be lost on many people not aware of UK politics. But it is important that the left wing message was aired to remind the Conservatives that such icons as the NHS must be protected and prospered...:)

I mentioned those sports due to popularity in different countries. the dutch may not give a hoot about basketball but that fact alone doesn't negate the viewership from north and south america, asia, and the rest of europe. wrestling is big in north america, a few european countries, the middle east, and asia.

I'm really not aware of countries that have that big a following as with equestrian, sailing, archery.

Exactly, so why suggest to abolish sports? Clearly someone somewhere cares a great deal, even if it isn't the Americans or the Dutch. Tht's the beauty of the Olympics.

I don't know if that's the case. again, other sports have also been part of the olympics and they have been dropped.

I love the mix of sports and the stories of sacrifice on behalf of the competitors who know they'll never get rich from it but do it for the love ofthe sport...
Weeeerrrrlllll... I wouldn't mind being endorsed like some gold medalists in the past... but I take your overall point.
